METALLIC RAILWAY CROSS-TIE AND FASTENING.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,304, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed November 5, 1887- Serial No. 254,449. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. YAR- BROUG-H, of Camden, ()uachita county, State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Railway Cross-Tie and Fastening; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, such as will on able others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference IO being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hollow railway cross I 5 ties and fastenings; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangements of its several parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of three forms of hollow 2o cross-ties having secured thereto a T-rail by means of my tie and rail fastener. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows: I take a slab of steel or other metal and cut out the form, so that when folded it will form a hollow square tie, A, having the solid base a, sloping ends I), and side openings, 0, said openings running up into the top (Z. The edges of said tie unite on the top and are held to- 0 gether by clamps F and the tie and rail fasteners D. The clamps F pass up through slots f in the face of the slab near its edges and are bent down and hold its two edges together. The tie and rail fasteners consist of 3 5 a square base, (1, having two or four arms, d, rising from its corners. The base part of said fasteners rests against the inner face of said hollow ties, and their arms (2 pass up through slots (Z in said cross-ties near each. end and near each edge, and are bent down on the base 61 of the T-rails and perform the double purpose of holding the edges of the cross-ties together and of holding the said rail in place. The holes 0 in the ends of said ties are to provide for fastening them to bridges, culverts, the. The tie marked B is the same as the one marked A, except the side openings, 0, are not so large, and the edges unite on the bottom and are secured by a greater number of clamps, F. The cross-tie marked C is the same as the one marked B, except that it has no side openings. The said ties may beblocked up with wood under the rails to stiffen them, or they may be rammed with dirt; but where the cars that pass over them are not of great weight they will be stiff enough without the wood or dirt.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v r '1. The hollow metallic cross-tie made of a slab of metal provided with the holes (2, and having its edges bound together by the clamps F, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the hollow metallic 6 5 cross-tie provided with the openings c, clamps E, binding its edges together, and tie and rail fastener D, securing T-rails to same said ties, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES E. YARBROUGII.
