Description
Y e. SAILLIEZ.
(No Model.)
RAILROAD 'r1-B 'on SLEBPER.
Patented July Z0, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLOTAIRE SAILLIEZ, OF WHAT OHEER, IOWA.
RAILROAD TIE OR` SLEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,733, dated July 20, 1886.
Application niea'Apmi 12, 188s.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLOTAIRE SAILLIEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at What Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Ties or Sleepers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of a main lineand switch with my improved ties or sleepers connected thereto; and Fig. 2, a detail view,in perspective, of one of the ties or sleepers.
My present invention has for its object to provide a metal tie or sleeper that can be quickly and conveniently applied to the rails of a main track or switch used in mines and tramways, without the necessity of employing spikes or like fastenings usually resorted to to fasten the rails in place, and it consists in the peculiar construction of the tie 0r sleeper, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A B represent the rails of the main track, and C D those of the switch, of the usual construction.
The ties or sleepers E, I form of metal, pref erably of Wrought metal, with downwardlyprojecting flanges a, extending longitudinally therewith, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving the ends of the tie or sleeper extending beyond the'ends of the iiange, as at b, which ends of said tie or sleeper are provided in any suitable manner with locking-flanges c. These flanges are bent over and down upon the base flanges of the rails, to hold them in place thereon, and the longitudinal flanges a, support the tie or sleeper and give itstrength and durability.
This tie or sleeper, as above described, is to be used on all lines of track where fish-plates are employed to make a continuous rail, no other form of tie or sleeper being necessary.
It may be found necessary, in addition to the flanges c, to turn the edges of the projecting ends b over and upon the base-flange of Serial No. 198,542. (No model.)
the outer side of the rails, as shown at d, and any number of the locking-flanges o may be provided on each tie or sleeper to adapt it to circumstances-viz., that of securing either two, three, or four rails at a point where the switch connects with the main track, as shown in Fig. l, the ties or sleepers, of course, being of increased length for this purpose. It is therefore not considered necessary to go into the details of construction of each individual tie or sleeper to adapt it to its various uses and manner of securing the rails thereto, as the location and position of the lockingflanges on the upper side of the tie or sleeper may be changed and their number increased from the nature and object of my invention, and the locking-flanges may be formed thereon in any convenient manner.
`When these ties or sleepers are used, it is preferred to employ stringers of wood, which extend directly under the rails to hold them from sinking into the ground, and the ties or Yor decreased at pleasure Without departing,y
sleepersY are fastened to the stringers by spikes,
nails, or other suitable means. The longitudinal flanges upon the sides of the tie or sleeper hold it in place by embedding themselves in the earth.
The tie or sleeper constructed in accordance with my invention is simple, strong, and durable, and can be used to advantage where the ordinary tie or sleeper would be ineffective as a support for the rails. Besides, it can be manufactured and placed in the market at a comparatively small cost over the metal ties of the usual form.
Amore rapid method of track-laying-is secured by the employment of my improved tie or sleeper, the locking-flanges being quickly and expeditiously bent over and upon the base-flanges of the rails to fasten them thereto without the use of spikes or other like fastenings, and the ballasting and surfacing of the track are more readily accomplished, and
Y no extra expense is incurred by tearing up the track to lay switches.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metallic tie or sleeper having longitudi- IOO IUI
nal and downwardly-projeeting side flanges, In testimony that I claim the above I have and lookinghnnges extending above the uphereunto subscribed my name in the presence per surface of the tie or sleeper and adapted of two witnesses.
to be bent ovel` and upon the base-anges 0f CLOTAIRE SAILLIEZ. 5 the rail, and the ends of the tie or sleeper ex- Vit-nesses:
tending beyond the side anges thereof, sub- J. P. W'ALES,
stantially as and for the purpose set forth. H. C. ADAMS.
