Description
I. WORMER.
DRESS SHIELD.
(N0 Model.)
Patented Sept-. 8,1896.
, m 7% ma E2? in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISABELLE W'ORMER, QF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRESS-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,285, dated September 8, 1896. Application filed October 1, 1894. Serial No. 524,650. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISABELLE WORMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to make a dress-shield that may be put on and taken off as an article of wearing-apparel and thus dispense with the trouble and time required to sew the same into a dress as well as obviate the necessity of having a separate shield for each separate dress; and my invention consists in the features and details hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied to the per' son of a wearer. Fig. 2 is perspective view of the same detached or off. I
In making my improvement in dress-shields I make the shields A of stockinette or other suitable or desirable material and of the shape that will enable them to conform to the armpits of the wearer. In this respect the shields may be made in size and form similarto those now in use. Instead of sewing or otherwise fastening the shields to the dress I provide them with straps a a, passing over the arms and shoulders of the wearer, and straps b b, passing across the back and breast, as shown in the drawings, so that the shields maybe put on and taken off the same as any other article of apparel. The shoulder-straps are attached to the shields at or near the fold formed by the juncture of the bodyportion and the arm portion and draw the shields snugly and securely up into the angle between the body and the arm of the wearer. The breast-strap is attached to the body portion of the shields at or near their lower or front extremities, so that there will be practically little, if any, portion of the shields below the point of attachment of the breast-strap. As the shoulder-straps draw the shields up and the breast-strap, through its lower point of attachment, draws the shields down against the tension of the shoulder-straps the body portions of the shields will be prevented from wrinkling or crumpling in a vertical direction. The straps may be attached to the shields in any desired manner, and preferably the breast and back straps, or at least one or the other, made of elastic material, so as to permit free and easy motions of the body of the wearer.
What I regardas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a dress protector comprising two shields, shaped to fit into the armpits and about the adjacent parts of the wearer, and fasteningstraps attached to the shields and passing over the arms, shoulders, back and breast of the wearer, the shoulder straps being attached to the shields substantially opposite the armpit-folds in the shields and the breaststraps attached to the body portions of the shields at or near their lower front extremities, whereby the breaststraps draw the body portions of the shields down against the tension of the shoulder-straps to prevent wrinkling or crumpling and to preserve them in a smooth condition while in use.
