B. LAZBLL.
BUST AND ABDOMINAL SUPPORTBR.
APPLIOATION FILED PEBJB. 1909.

Emma
BESSIE LAZELL, OF NEW Y ORK,.N. Y.
BUST AND ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1909.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910. Serial No. 478,582.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bnssm LAZELL, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust and Abdominal Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a -wearing apparel to be worn like a waistcoat in that it is provided with arm holes and is supported, by the shoulders of the wearer and one which may be tightened by means rendering it capable of being used by people of different sizes. The coat like garment is provided with stays to maintain it in the form to constitute a bust supporter and is also equipped to form an abdominal supporter, being for this purpose provided with a depending front portion or apron which when secured, as to the hose, for instance, will be held taut or stretched by the shoulders.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows the garment in the position it assumes in use. Fig. 2 shows the garment opened. 7
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body garment which, as shown in .Fig. 2, may be formed of a single piece of material suitably out to fit over the shoulders and around the waist. The garment is preferably made of rubber cloth to render it adapted for wear with bathing costumes. At its upper central front portion the garment is formed to constitute a bust supporter and is made with a series of vertical shirrs 2 to receive flexible stays such as whalebone. To this extent the article provides a simple bust supporter which is sufliciently flexible to avoidany inconvenience to the wearer. I
I have shown the garment formed with tapering extension pieces 3 which are passed.
around the sides and back of the wearer, crossing in the back and held in front at or near the waist line as by tying their ribbon extremities 4. These extension pieces may obviously be tightened or loosened to suit the requirements of the wearer, and they co-act with the stays to maintain the bust supporter in position on the wearer. They further operate to bracethe back'and shoulder blades of the wearer.
At the central portion of the lower front edge I have shown the garment extended downward below the waist line as at 5. This depending part ,or apron is shown formed with holes 6 by which it may be connected to any part of the wearing apparel as, for instance, the hose, which will co-act with the shoulders of the wearer to maintain the bust supporter in position and the front of the garment pulled tautthereby tending to depress the abdomen. M
It will be noted that the parts 2. and 5, in performing, respectively, the oflices of bust and abdominal supports, are held as against displacement, the extension pieces affording means for readily adjusting and removing the garment.
While I prefer to make the garment of rubber cloth in order to adapt it to bathing costumes, yet obviously various materials may be used. An advantage of the rubber cloth, however, is that it maybe reversed and the rubber face worn next to the-body. This tends to promote perspiration and may be desirable to people wishing to reduce their flesh.
The garment is primarily designed to be worn with bathing suits but it maybe worn beneath other clothing and perform the functions recited. 1
I claim as my invention 1. As an article of manufacturea body garment consisting of a piece of material having a waist portion provided with shoulder straps and stays, constituting a bust support and extension pieces adapted to be passed around the sides and back of the wearer and to be secured together in front; and an apron, adapted for the attachment of hose supporters, depending from the front of said waist portion constituting an abdominal support. 1
2. As an article of manufacture, a reversible body garment of rubber cloth comprising a waist portion formed with arm holes .and provided with stays, to constitute a bust Waist portion around the sides and cross at specification in the presence of two subscribthe back of the wearer and to be secured tomg Witnesses.
. gether in front over said stays, and an apron, l BESSIE LAZELL adapted for the attachment of hose supporters depending from the front of said Waist Witnesses:
portion to constitute an abdominal support. GRAFTON L. MQGILL, In testimony whereof, I have signed this WILLIAM A. TENNEY.
