MANUFACTURE OF SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,149, dated September 8, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MARGARETHA Mlinz and LOUISA SACK, citizens of the United 'States, residing in New York, county and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to the manufacture of footwear; and it consists of a pattern for a shoe-upper whereby a well-fitting shoe may be constructed with only one seam, located in a place where it will not press or chafe the foot.

Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a pattern of our improved shoe-upper. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the outer side of a shoe-upper bent in shape. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the upper from the inner side of the shoe. This view shows also the location of the seam.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views'.

Our improved shoe-upper is cut all in one piece, vamp D being out in the usual shape and split in the center of the instep of the foot by the out extending from e to i. The edge of vamp D from f to c is made with a reversed curve, as shown, correspondingly with the edge g h, to which it is joined, point g correresponding with point e and point h corresponding with point f.

Dotted line from a to 1) marks the central divisional line of the upper in the back of the shoe.

Flap O is cut to cover the slit of the shoeframe from point i downward over point i, and its function is also to join the upper over this slit. It will be observed that the peculiar shape of this flap and the arrangement of the buttons around its edge will obviate every necessity for any seam on the instep of the shoe. Flap O is provided with buttonholes, and buttons are set along the slit 4; i. Buttons m and 0 correspond in position with holes n and p of the flap and serve to join the edges of the slit from c to 2'. Buttons 10 correspond in position with holes Z of the flap G, and all of the buttons may be set'farther from or nearer to the edge of slit i i to perfect the fitting of the shoe. i

To form a shoe-upper from a blank out after our improved pattern, we proceed as follows: The blank is folded over the last on line a to I). Then the vamp D is drawn over so that its outer edge, extending from a to f, joins the edge from g to h of the side-A point to point. These two edges are then sewed together, and this is the only seam necessary in the construction of the shoe. Buttons 0 on the vamp D may remain permanently in the corresponding holes 19, thus joining flap O permanently to that section of the vamp. For putting on and taking the shoe off of the foot it will be only necessary to button or unbutton the buttons and so many of buttons m so the foot may easily be slid in and out of the shoe. The ingress to the inside of the shoe for necessary repairs or for other purposes will be greatly facilitated by withdrawing buttons 0 from their holes and then turning back the button-flap C out of the way.

We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shoe-upper, made of one piece of material and joined by one seam only, having a slit vamp and a flap adapted to be fastened to the separated portion of the vamp, to cover the slit along the edge of the shank and to join the parts.

2. In a shoe-upper, constructed of one piece of material, the combination with a vamp slit to provide an aperture for the foot and extended backward so as to bring the joiningseam between the vamp and the shank of the shoe in the instep of the foot, the combination with this extended vamp of a flap adapted to be buttoned on both sides of the slit of the shoe thereby covering the slit and joining the upper.
