Description

PATENT OFFICE@ AMBROSE ALEXANDER, OF MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,688, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBEosE ALEXANDER, of Middleville, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Washing Clothes ot' every description; and I do hereby declare that the ollowug is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention will be fully understood by the drawing, which is a vertical longitudinal ccntral section, in which- L L L represent the frame; M, the Washing box; H, the vertical rubber, supported by the end of the box C; K, the bottom of the washin g-boX; N, the lid, a partial cover of said box; I, the rubber or wash-board dasher, J, wheels supporting the wash-board dasher, avoiding friction by rolling on the bottom K of thebox.
A D E F G is a compound leverage, and is operated in the following way: By pressing the handle A toward the box, D is drawn forward, which throws F backward, necessarily drawing the dasher Gr up the inclined plane K of the box. When the dasher or wash-board moves up it leaves the clothes in the machine, so that they turn onethird over at every move of the dasher or wash-board down the inclined plane, not only pressing, but squeezing the clothes between thelrubbers at the same time.
Its capacity for washing would be equal in bulk to two double sheets at one washing,
thus promoting expedition and economy in washing all kinds of clothing.
What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe employment of dash-board I with supporting friction-rollers J, in combination with acompound leverage, A, D, E, F, and G, for operatin g the same, as substantially described.
