WAIST-BELT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,626, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed May 28, 1896. Serial No. 593,428. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN F. SCHOTZ, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ladys v/Vaist-Belt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an inside waist-belt especially adapted for ladies use, and the object of the invention is to construct a belt which may be worn with comfort and which is particularly adapted for contracting the figure at the junction of the hips with the waist in a manner to lengthen the waist, accomplishing a result not obtainable by the use of a corset, no matter how tightly the corset may be drawn to the figure.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin. g a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a view illustrating the belt applied to the figure. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the belt, one of the pockets therein being opened; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal horizontal section through the belt.

In carrying out the invention the body portion of the belt A may be made of any suitable material, and at each side of the central portion of the body, upon the inner face of the same,a pocket 10 is formed by the attachment of the body material to a strip 10" of proper material. XVit-hin each pocket a spring 11 is located, extending practically from end to end, and the said spring is reinforced upon its inner face by an added strip of a spring material, preferably of a lozenge or diamond shape; but this inner leaf 12 of the spring may be given other shape, if in practice it is found desirable, the leaf or inner section 12 of the spring being secured to the main spring 11 by means of rivets 13 or their equivalents, and the outermost rivet passing through a slot 13 in the main spring to permit the two springs to adapt themselves to the curvature of the body.

Between the two pockets containing the aforesaid springs a space 1% is formed, at which space the flexible body material of the belt is disclosed, and at one end of the said belt a flexible tab 15 is formed, which may also be made by a continuation of the body material beyond the outer end of the pocket at that portion of the belt, and at the opposite end of the belt the body material is likewise exposed, or the belt is made flexible and is provided with a buckle 16 or the equivalent of the same. The upper edge of the belt is concaved and the lower edge of the belt is convened, while the main springs 11 follow the contour of the belt proper.

The belt is adapted to be worn over the corset, as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is drawn tight upon the person it will compress the flesh where the waist and hip lines come to gether, drawing in the hip portion of the figure to such an extent as to cause the surface of the figure embraced by the belt to form a continuation of the waist line, thereby lengthening the waist, and this is accomplished without discomfort to the wearer, and it cannot be accomplished by the fitting of a corset, owing to the corset having to be carried downward over the hips. The springs 11 and 12 effectually serve to maintain the body encompassed by the spring portions of the belt uniformly in a contracted position, and the curvature of the belt is such as to conform to the desired shape of the figure and prevent the belt being uncomfortable while being worn.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a belt, consisting of a body of flexible material having apocket on each side of the center and provided with fastening devices at its ends, the upper edge of the belt being concave and the lower edge convex, and a spring in each pocket, said spring consisting of two leaves loosely connected together, as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a belt, consisting of a body portion of flexible mate rial having a pocket at each side of the center and provided with fastening devices at its ends, the upper edge of the belt being concave and the lower edge convex, and aspring in each pocket, said spring consisting of two leaves loosely connected together, one leaf being of the shape of the belt and the other diamond shape, as specified.
