SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,742, dated October 18, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CECIL M. DURNIL, of Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Bustle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

-My invention relates to a bustle composed, mainly, of wire; and the invention consists, principally, in constructing the bustle in such a manner that it may be adjusted both as to width and depth and attached to the body at and also below the waist, and will assume a position close to the body when pressure is brought to bear upon it, as when the wearer sits down in a chair, and after pressure is removed will assume its proper position.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of my new and improved bustle, and Fig. 2 a side elevatiou showing a modification.

The bustle is composed of the main wire A, bows B, of wire, adjusting straps or cords C D, and the beltstraps E E and F F. The wire A is bent to form the lower how, a, the series of eyes b b to receive the ends of the bows B, the uprights c c, the top how, a, the upper loops, (1 d, to receive the straps E E, and the lower loops, 6 e, to receive the strap 0 and also the straps F F. The bows B and also the main wire A are each bent to form a central eye,f, to receive the back cord, D, by which the depth of the bustle may be adjusted to suit the wearer. The strap 0 is provided with a buckle, and is for adjusting the width of the bustle, and this strap is of elastic material and rests against the person, so that when there is no pressure upon the bustle more than the weight of the garments the bustle will be held out properly from the person by the strap 0; but when pressure does come against the back of the bustle, as when the wearer sits down, the elasticity of the strap 0 will permit the bustle to be pressed close to the person, thus avoiding all inconvenience and discomfort experienced with the common form of bustle.

The belt-straps E E are to be fastened about the waist of the wearer, while the straps F F are passed around the body below the waist, so that the bustle is held to the body at two points, and hence cannot be shifted out of place, and the bustlebeing attached in this manner it moves with the body, so it can always be relied upon to set out the clothing in the proper manner.

In Fig. 2 I dispense with the loops 6 and slope the wire A at the sides upward directly from the back to the top corner loops, d, which receive the elastic strap 0 and also the belts or straps F F. In this form of bustle, also, I form the top wire, a, with the loops 01 about midway between the cord D and the corner loops, d, and in these loops Iattach the straps E E, which go around the waist of the wearer. The lower wire, a, in Fig. 2 is of but slightly greater radius than the top wire, a, and the intermediate bows, B, are formed of such rela tive size to each other and to the wires (1 a that the cord D describes nearly a half-circle contracted at both top and bottom, so that the form of the bustle is practically that of a roll. In this manner it will be seen that my invention is applicable to the various forms of wire bustles with equal facility, always permitting the bustle to hug the person when more than ordinary pressure is brought to bear against it.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new and improved article of manufacture, a bustle composed of the adj ustable bows B, hinged to the main wire A, formed with the top and bottom curved wires, a a, in combination with the four straps E E F F and the elastic strap 0, which unites the sides of the main wire A, substantially as described.
