PRINTING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,224, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed November 30, 1895. Serial No. 570,722. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PROUTY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new an d useful Improvementsin PrintingPresses, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to printing-presses; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompa nying drawings, and to the claims hereto appended, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a printing-press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a partial section on line as m on Fig. 1, looking toward the front of the machine, drawn to an enlarged scale.
In the drawings, A is the frame of the press. B is the platen-yoke, pivoted to said frame at a. O is the driving-shaft; D, the crankshaft; E, the fly-wheel, mounted upon one end of said driving-shaft; b, a pinion firmly secured upon the opposite end of said driving-shaft and engaging the teeth of and imparting motion to the gear-wheel F, firmly secured upon the end of the crank-shaft D.
The driving-shaft C may have rotary motion imparted thereto by means of a belt and pulley connecting it with any suitable source of power, or by a treadle and crank, (not shown,) as may be preferred.
The crank D of the shaft D has mounted thereon one end of the pitmanG, the opposite end of which is pivoted to the gear-segment ll, secured upon the shaft H, mounted in bearings in the frame A, and is movable about the axis of said shaft by the rotation of the crank D. The segment II engages and imparts motion to the toothed segment 1, formed upon or secured to the shaft I, also mounted in suitable hearings in the frame A, and having formed upon each end thereof a crank-disk 1 in which are set the crank-pins c 0, upon each of which is mounted one end of a draw-bar J, the opposite end of which is pivoted to the platen-yoke B, as shown.
The platen B is of usual construction and is adjustably secured to the platen-yoke in any well-known manner.
K is the ink-distributin g plate, constructed, arranged, and operated in any well-known manner.
L L are the roller wings or frames, having fitted thereto in the usual manner the rollercarrying saddles cl d and rods 6 e, and f f are the inking-rollers.
The roller-wings L L are mounted upon the peripheries of the crank-disks I I and are connected together by the curved plate L, secured thereto by the bolts g g, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
M is a connecting-rod pivoted at its upper end to an car on the lower end of one of the roller-wings L, and is mounted at its other end upon the crank-pin h, set in the side of the gear-wheel F.
By mounting the roller-wings upon the peripheries of the crank-disks that operate the platen a considerable advantage is obtained in the cost of manufacture and also in the compactness of the machine.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing without further explanation here.
YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a printing-press the combination of a movable platen; a pair of crank-disks, a pair of crank-pins set in said disks and a pair of draw-bars for operating said platen, and a pair of roller-wings mounted upon and movable about the peripheries of said crank-disks.
2. The combination in a printing-press of a movable platen; an oscillating shaft provided with a toothed segment at or near the middle of its length anda crank-disk on each end thereof 3 a second oscillating shaft provided with a gear-segment to engage and impart motion to said first-mentioned segment; a pair of roller-wings mounted upon and movable about the peripheries of said crankdisks; a pair of draw-bars connecting said crank-disks and the platen; means for oscillating said segments and crank-disks to give the impression; and means for vibrating said roller-wings independently of the movement of the said crank-disks.
3. The combination in a printing-press of type-bed and a movable platen; a pair of oscillating crank-disks and a pair of draw-bars for operating said platen; a pair of gear-segments, a crank and a pitman for imparting an oscillating motion to said crank-disks; a
pair of roller-Wings mounted upon and movable about the peripheries of said crank-disks and connected together to form a single rigid 10 frame; and a revolving crank and a connecting-rod for imparting an oscillating inotion to said roller-frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 23d day of 15 November, A. D. 1895.
