VIBRATOR-ROLL FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,984, dated April 20, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS MEISEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Mechanism for Giving Endwise Motion to the Vibrator-Rolls for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotary webprinting machine having my improved vibrator-roll mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking outward in the direction of the arrow 10. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of one of the oscillating bevel-wheels and parts connected therewith, looking-inward in the direction of the arrow 12, Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective mechanism for giving endwise motion to the vibrator-rolls of printing-machines, said mechanism being particularly adapted for use on machines in which the form from which the impression is made isv in cylindrical shape, commonly termed rotary printing-machines.
To this end my invention consists in operating the rocker-levers from which endwise motion is transmitted to the vibrator-rolls by means of oscillating bevel-wheels lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the end of the printing-cylinder lies and receiving motion throughsuitable connections from the driving-shaft, saidbevel-gears meshing with sector-gears on said rocker-levers, whereby all the vibrator-rolls throughout the machine are simultaneously operated in a simple and convenient manner from a single shaft, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the said drawings, A represents the framework of a rotary printing-machine, around which are arranged a series of pairs of form and impression cylinders B C, Fig. 2, the ends of said cylinders being shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The web of paper shown dotted in Fig. 1 is drawn from a roll D and passes between the several pairs of form and impression cylinders, by which the impressions are produced in the usual manner. Each form-cylinder is provided with the usual inking apparatus, consisting of form-rollers, distributing-cylinders, vibrator-rolls, lac. which are rotated by suitable gears receiving motion from the gear on the shaft of the form-cylinder. The shafts a of the vibrator-rolls G, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, are rotated by means of suitable gears, and to these vibrator-rolls endwise motion is given by mechanism which will now be described. To the outer end of one of the shafts b of the machine, which is connected with the driving-shaft by a train of gears,is secured outside the framework a disk 0 to a crank-pin d, on which are pivoted two connecting-rods e e, the opposite ends of which are respectively pivoted to two bevel-wheels H H, mounted on studs g, projecting from a casting A, bolted to the framework A,said studs being arranged in line with the axes of the formcylinders, whereby as the disk 0 is rotated an oscillating movement is imparted to said Wheels H H, which are provided at their peripheries with bevel-teeth h. These wheels are preferably provided with teeth at certain portions only of their peripheries, as shown, but the teeth may extend entirely around the wheels, if desired.
The bevel-wheels H H are caused to oscillate other similar toothed bevel-wheels H by means of connecting-rods k, and one of the latter bevel-wheels is connected to still another bevel-wheel H by a rod m, as shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 1, and in this manner any desired number of similar bevelwheels arranged around the machine can be simultaneously oscillated from a single driving-shaft.
Each bevel-wheel H gives endwise motion to the several vibrator-rolls G of the inking apparatus of a single-form cylinder in the following manner: K is a double-ended rockerlever which is pivoted on a stud projecting radially from the casting A in a plane at right angles to the axis of the stud g, on which the bevel wheel H oscillates, said rocker-lever being provided at the center with a sector bevel-gear f, meshing with the wheel H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said rocker-lever being provided at its two opposite ends ICO with oscillating projections a, which engage grooved disks 6, secured to the ends of the shafts aof a pair of vibrator-rolls G, as shown in Fig. 4, which are thus reciprocated in the direction of their length as the wheel II is oseillated by the means described.
L is another rocker-lever, which is also pivoted on a radial studprojecting from the casting A at right angles to the stud g, said rocker-lever L being provided with a sectorgear 8, Figs. 2 and 3, also meshing with the teeth of the oscillating wheel II, this lever L being connected by a rod 7' with an arm 15, Fig. 2, secured to the end of a rocker-shaft 5', supported in suitable bearings projecting from a bracket 15, secured to the framework A. To this rocker-shaft s are secured two short arms 16 18, as shown in Fig. 1, the arm 16 having an oscillating projection 20, which engages a grooved disk 10 at the end of another vibrator-roll, and the arm 18 having a similar projection 20, which engages a grooved disk on one of another pair of vibrator-rolls connected to reciprocate in opposite directions by a double-ended rocker-arm 22, so that as the shafts is rocked the vibrator-rolls connected therewith will be reciprocated simultaneously with the pair actuated by the rocker-lever K, as previously described, and in this manner all the vibrator-rolls throughout the machine are simultaneously reciprocated in the direction of their length as the disk 0 is rotated. I do not wish to limit myself to the number of vibrator-rolls operated from a single oscillating bevel-wheel II, as the number may be increased or diminished without departing from the spirit of my invention.
If more rolls are required, as many rockerlevers may be arranged around and to mesh with a single bevel-wheel II as its circumference will properlyaccommodate, the castingA being provided witha radial stud similar to those above described for each rockerlever, or each rocker-lever may be made to operate more vibrator-rolls by means of suitable connections similar to those shown and described.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a printing-machine, the combination with the printing-cylinder, of a vibrator-roll, an oscillating toothed bevel-wheel lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the end of the printing-cylinder lies, a rockerlever having a sector-gear meshing with said bevel-wheel and suitable connections between the rocker-lever and the vibrator-roll, whereby the latter is reciprocated in the direction of its length as the bevel-wheel is oscillated, substantially as set forth.
2. In a printing-machine, the combination with the printing-cylinder, of the vibratorrolls and their shafts, an oscillating toothed bevel-wheel lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the end of the printing-cylinder lies and means for actuating the same, rocker levers provided with sector gears meshing with said bevel-wheel, and suitable connections between the rocker-levers and the vibrator-rolls, whereby the latter are reciprocated in the direction of their length as the bcvelwheel is oscillated, substantially as set forth.
3. In a printing-maehine, the combination with the printing-cylinder, of the vibratorrolls and their shafts, an oscillating toothed bevel-wheel lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the end of the printing-cylinder lies and means for actuating the same, rocker levers provided with sector gears meshing with said bevel-wheel, said rockerlevers being mounted on studs arranged radially with respect to the stud on which said bevel-wheel is mounted and at right angles thereto, and suitable connections between the rocker-levers and the vibrator-rolls, whereby the latter are reciprocated in the direction of their length as the bevel-wheel is oscillated, substantially as set forth.

In a printing-machine, the combination with the printing-cylinder, of a pair of vibrator-rolls and their shafts, the latter providcd at their ends with grooved disks, an oscillating toothed bevel-wheel lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the end of the printing-cylinder lies and means for actuating the same, a double-ended centrally-pivoted rocker-lever having projections en gaging the grooved disks of the shafts of the vibrator-rolls, and provided with a sector gear meshing with said oscillating wheel, whereby the vibrator-rolls are reciprocated in the direction of their length as the bevel-wheel is oscillated, substantially as described.
5. In a printing-machine, the combination with the several sets of vibrator-rolls, of a series of oscillating toothed bevel-wheels and suitable connections, whereby motion is transmitted to all of said bevel-wheels from a single shaft, rocker-levers provided with sector-gears meshing with said oscillating bevel-wheels, and suitable connections be tween said rocker-levers and the shafts of the vibrator-rolls, whereby the latter are reciprocated in the direction of their length as the bevel-wheels are oscillated, substantially as set forth.
