G. w. MASCORD. s FUDGE 0R LATE NEWS DEVICE FOR NEWSPAPER PRINTING PRESSES.
n APPLICATION FILED JULY 20,1915.

GEORGE W. MASCOBD, OF BARNES, LONDON, ENGLAND.
FUDGE OR LATE-NEWS DEVICE FOR NEWSPAPER-PRINTING PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed July 20, 1915. Serial No. 40,920.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM MAscoRD, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 5, The Crescent, Barnes, London, S. W., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Fudge or Late-News Devices for Newspaper-Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fudge or late news devices for newspaper printing presses and has for its object to mount a number of such devices for printing late news on more than one page, and upon the same impression cylinder, and in such manner that they may be manipulated without stopping the press.
According to the invention I preferably mount the impression cylinder at a position above that at which the respective webs are associated and folded, and .I mountthe type or fudge box cylinders and their Vdrivingy spindles upon eccentric bearings by which upon the movement of a lever the spindle upon which the cylinders or fudge boxes are mounted may be operated to ,lift the fudge typel from contact with the impression cylinder but without taking the gear teeth of the driving mechanismentirely out of'mesh; while according to the invention moreover I provide a magnetic or other suitable clutch by which the spindles upon which the type cylinders or fudge Y boxes are mounted Vmay both be disconnected or one vdisconnectedwhile the vother remains in motion as may be desired and so that the type may 'be press continues working.
The invention comprises the construction hereinafter described.
In carrying the invention into effect in its application to a double width machine I may provide two sets of type or fudge box cylinders, suitable for holding fudge boxes for printing late news, two cylinders upon the same spindle, one set for printing say each of the irst pages and the other set for printing each of the last or fourth pages. Or for a single width or two page wide press only one fudge for say each of the rst and last pages would be used on each of the two shafts. The respective sets of type cylinders or fudge boxes are mounted in position above the impression cylinder and at such distance away from each other that each of the cylinders or boxes is readily acchanged while the4 Y cessible. Each of the spindles is geared to receive movement fromv the impression cylinder by toothed wheels and each spindle is mounted upon an eccentric bearing in the frame onl which it is carried and an operating lever is provided by means of which the fudge boxes are readily lifted clear of the impression cylinder and arrested in movement, and just as readily restored to their working positions to run in register withk the webs. In order to insure this result the clutch .may be provided with its faces so formed that they engage only when K they reachone determined position. A suitably operated hand locking brake is also fitted to each shaft or fudge carrying spindle for the purpose of retarding and stopping it exactly as required.
The invention isnot limited to the particular form of `clutch that may be employed nor is it limited to the number of spindles nor to the number of type cylinders orfudge boxes that may be used and it may be applied to presses of one or more pages .wide and of any type.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated according to one construction in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan and Fig. 2 a diagrammatic side elevation of a fudge or late news printing device provided according to the invention.
As illustrated in the drawings two sets of type or fudge box cylinders a and b are provided, four cylinders being mounted upon each spindle a1 and a2. Each of the spindles a1 a2 is geared to receive movement from the impression cylinder or from the gear of the press by spur wheels imparting movement to the pinion cl (Fig. l) which is mounted upon the spindle. Each spindle a2 or al is mounted in the frame or brackets e within which an eccentric bush or bea-ring -"together by'av rod' f2 and Jmay be -movedby means ,of a suitable handle or by suc-h means as -a spindle carrying 2mn-operating vrWheel yand --p-'inions, which' latter are provided to gear with a. toothed 'segment'provided upon the upper extremity of the respective arms f1. A suitably operated lia-nd brake'z'rmay be fitted at the position indicated and a brake Wheel l may be provided for the purpose of retarding and stopping therespective spindles a1 or a2 When required. A clutch y' may be provided at theA end of each spindle al or a2 one clutch member jl being secured to rotate With the spindle al or a2, While the other 'y'2 is carried by a boss integrally p-rovided with' the pinion d.
It Will be understood that such a late news device can be used for single web machines or for machines of two or more pages in Width and that ,any number of sets of type cylinders or fudge boxes may be arranged each provided in the manner illustrated so that the respective sets of type cylinders or fudge boxes may be independently controlled for being brought into and out of "contact With the impression cylinder.
I claims- 1. In a printing press comprising the usual printing couple, a fudge box cylinder, a spindle uponvvhich said fudgebox is mounted, connected eccentric bearings Within Which the said spindle is carried, a conv tinuously rotating impression cylinder man` ually operated means for the partial rotation of the said eccentricbearings for lifting the fudge .bex .cylinder from Contact#with the impression cylinder gear for causing the rotation ofthesaid spindle, and means vfor :dis-V is "mounted, connected "eccentric Ubearings wah-in'whichthe Said spindle `Cylinder is- 1` carried, a continuously rotating :impression clyinder manually operated means for the partial; 4rot-ation. of vthe said'. eccentric bearings for lifting ythe fudge"box cylinder from contact with the impression cylinder,
gear for causingthe rotation of the said spindle, and a clutch 'b-ywhich'the spindle of the fudge"-box cylinder may be discondescribed.
3. yIn a printing `press comprising the' usual printing couple, a fudge -'box cylinder, aspindle upon vwhichr said fudge "-box cylinder-ismounted,connectedeccentric bear# ings Within Whichiithesaid spindle iscarried, a continuously `rotating impression cylinder manually operated means for the partial ro- 'nected' from the said gear, substantially as tation .of the said eccentric bearings for lifting the udge""box cylinder from contact with the. impression cylindelg; gear for causing the rotation ofthe'said spindle,a .clutch by which the spindle of `the Vfudgembox cylinder may be disconnected-from-'the gear of theI press, and a brake vby which the rotation of the lfudgecarrying cylinder may be arrested, substantially asdescribed.
