SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,461, dated July 14, 1903.

To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS COSSAR, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 6 Osborne Place, Govan, county of Lanark, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flat-Bed Oscillating-Cylinder Printing-Machines, (for which application for patent has been made in Great Britain, No. 20,891, dated September 25, 1902,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flat-bed oscillating-cylinder printing-machines, and particularlyto the looping-rollers and operating-gear which draw the paper web under the impression-cylinder and keep the paper at the proper tension during the printing stroke.
A leading feature of the present improvements is that the looping-rollers, as carried upon reciprocating racks, instead of being operated, as is usual, through gearing from a cam which is suitably shaped to alone impart the requisite movements to the racks are in part actuated by gearing from the oscillating cylinder itself and in part from a cam through the same gearing, their motion being compounded of that of the cam and that of the cylinder, so that the form of the cam is not only simplified, but the apparatus is more readily adapted for fitting on existing sheetfed oscillating-cylinder printing-machines to transform them into web-machines, as by this invention the forms of cam employed may be very nearly or exactly alike in different machines, although ihe motion of the beds may vary considerably, such variations being antomatically provided for by the action of the cylinder on the looping-rollers, while the in vention also provides for Variations in the size of the work printed in the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of part of a flat-bed oscillating-cylinderprinting-machine, showing the impression-cylinder and looping-roller gear in elevation. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and a are views corresponding to Fig. 1, but illustrating modified forms of the looping-roller gear.
In the modification of the invention illustrated at Figs. 1 and 2 the impression-cylinder A, which is oscillated in the usual way by racks b on each side of the reciprocating type-bed B, has secured on the end or ends of its spindle C a toothed pinion D, preferably of half the diameter of the cylinder, the said pinion being in gear with a toothed Wheel E, loosely centered on a shaft F above and parallel with the cylinder-shaft 0.. This shaft F has keyed on ita pair of toothed wheels G G, which gear with and operate the racks or rack-frames H, carrying the looper-rollers I, and it is driven from the loose toothed wheel F. through the intervention of a train embracing pinions J J, carried on an oscillating lever or frame K, which is loosely centered on the shaft F and is acted on by a cam L to vary the position of said pinions relative to the other members of the train and impart the requisite irregular oscillating movement to the rack-actuating shaft F. The train and the connection to the cam may be arranged in various ways. In the arrangement shown at Figs. 1 and 2 the loose toothed wheel E is in gear with a pinion or pair of pinions J J, carried by the oscillating frame K, centered on the shaft F, and on which is also centered a pinion or a pair of pinions J J in gear with the first pinion or pair of pinions J J and also geared to a toothed wheel'E', fast on the shaft F, on which are fixed the toothed wheels G G, engaging the racks H, which carry the looping-rollers I, and the oscillating frame K is furnished with a lever-arm'M, to which is adjustably connected a rod or lever N, connected to and operated by the cam L, which may, as usual, he keyed on the crank-shaft O, which actuates the reciprocating type-bed B. The oscillating motion imparted to the parallel shaft F, which operates the looping-roller racks H, is thus derived from the impression-cylinder A, but is modified by the intervention of the cam L, and the extent of movement canbe varied for different lengths of work by adjusting the point of attachment of the rod N, connecting the lever-arm M on the oscillating frame K to the cam L, the arm M being slotted to facilitate such adjustable c0nnection.
In the arrangement of the gear shown at Fig. 3 the loose toothed wheel E on the parallel shaft F in gear with the toothed wheel D on the cylinder-shaft O has on its face a bevel-wheel e in gear with a bevel-pinion or pair of pinions J on an oscillating frame K, loosely centered on the shaft F, the said pinions being also in gear with a bevel-wheel E, fast on the same shaft F. The oscillating frame K has a lever-arm M, connected by a rod N to the cam L, as in the example al-..
ready described, and while the motion imparted through the train to the rack-actuating or parallel shaft F is synchronous with that of the impression-cylinder A so long as the oscillating frame K is stationary the movement of the latter by the cam L imparts the requisite variation to operate the loopingrollers, so that they automatically maintain the proper tension on the web during the printing operation and draw it under the cylinder at the end of the printing stroke.
In the arrangement of the driving-train shown at Fig. at the loose wheel E, which is externally toothed and in gear with the toothed wheel D on the cylinder-shaft O, is also formed with internal teeth 6, with which are geared a pair of pinions J on the oscillating frame K, whose movement is controlled by the cam L, and these pinions J'also gear with a toothed wheel E, keyed on the parallel shaft F, on which the oscillating frame K is centered, so that the motion imparted to said shaft is compounded of the motion of the oscillating impression-cylinder A and of the cam motion.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a flat-bed oscillating-cylinder printing-machine the combination with theimpres' sion -cylinder and its shaft and a parallel shaft having gear-wheels for operating looping-roller carriers of a driving-train connecting said shafts of which train one member is loose, a swinging frame centered loosely on one of the shafts carrying pini ons which connect the fast and loose members of the train, and a rotating cam connected to said swinging frame whereby motion transmitted to the looping-roller carriers is compounded of the movements of the cylinder and of the cam.
2. In a fiat-bed oscillating-cylinder printing-machine the combination with the impression-cylinder and its shaft, a parallel shaft having gear-wheels for operating loopingroller carriers, a gear-wheel on the cylinder shaft meshing with a loose gear-wheel on the parallel shaft a swinging frame centered on said shaft carrying a wheel-train connecting the loose gear-wheel and a fixed gear-wheel on the parallel shaft, and a cam and connecting-rod actuated thereby and adjustably attached to the swinging frame whereby the motion transmitted to the looping-roller carriers is compounded of the movements of the cylinder and of the cam.
