OSCILLATING PRINTING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,227, dated October 12, 1880. Application filed January 27, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS FORKNALL, a resident of New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new, useful, and important Improvement in Printing-Presses, described in this specification.
The object of my invention is a strong, simple, cheap, and powerful printing-press suited for job-Work.
My invention consists, principally, in stationary guides, in combination with the platen and intermediate and operating mechanism, to impart the requisite period of motion and rest to the platen and to give force during the impression.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of press involving my invention, showing the guides curved upward. Fig.2 is a modification, in side View, showing the guides curved downward. Fig. 3 is adetail view of the guides in Fig. 1.
In the form of machine shown, A B are side supporting-frames, connected at the bottom by rods 0 D and at the top by the bed E, which supports the chase that holds the type. On the rod 0 is hung loosely a lever-treadle, F, detachably and loosely connected by rod 1' with crank-shaft H, having bearings a a in the side frames. The crank-shaft projects at one end outside the side frame, B, and carries a hand or fly wheel, W. On the other end of the crankshaft, within the side frames, is a pinion-wheel, K, that meshes into a crank-wheel, L, having its bearing on a stud, b, in the side frame, A. The crank-wheel has a wrist-pin, c, to which is loosely connected one end of arm M, the other end of the arm being loosely connected to rod (1, connecting the inner ends of the arms efg h of the toggle-joints.
The toggle-arms ef are connected at their outer ends to a rod, is, supported in the side frames. The toggle-arms g It are connected at their outer ends to a rod, N, which extends outside of the side frames, and is there connected to the side arms, 0 P, pivoted at m a to the yoke R of the platen. The rod N rests in the side frames on rollers 12 in stationary guides S T, of the form shown.
The curves of the stationary guides, which give rest to the platen, may be described in the form shown by taking on a pair of compasses the distance between the centers of the pivot-holes in the side arms, then, when the press is open, describing from the centers of the ends of the pivots on the yoke of the platen the curves, as aforesaid.
The platen S, for carrying the material to be printed, is adjustable by set-screws in the yoke.
By operating the treadle or hand-Wheel motion is imparted to the crank-shaft, the gear, the toggle-joints, the rod in the stationary guides, and to the platen.
The stationary guides are so formed that the plat-en rests when down, to afford time for removing the material printed and for replacing it with material to be printed, and also rests when up, to afford time for a good print or impression.
The press may be driven by power, by a bandwheel, or otherwise, and the treadle dispensed with. Other details of construction and operation may be varied within the scope of my invention.
I claim 1. The combination of platen S, bed E, yoke R, arms 0 P, stationary guides S T, rod N, toggle-arms e f g h, pitman M, gear-wheel L, pinion K, crank-shaft H, fly-wheel W, and treadle F, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of platen S, arms 0 P, stationary guides S T, substantially as described, rod N, toggle-arms e f g h, and operating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
3. Stationary guides, substantially as described, in combination with a platen, togglejoints, and intermediate and operating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
4. Stationary guides, substantially as described, in combination with a platen and intermediate and operating mechanism, to give the requisite period of motion and rest to the platen and force during the impression, substantially as set forth.
