UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ALVIN N. WOODARD, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO JAMES T. SAWHILL, JOHN L. SAWHILL, AND ABRAHAM SMALL, OF
SAME PLACE.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,107, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed March 6, 1896. Serial No. 582,125. (No model.)
o device auxiliary to or supplemental of the ordinary door lock or bolt for fastening doors from the inside in such manner that should the lock or bolt be opened surreptitiously the door will still be secured. Such devices are sometimes designated door-securers, and
I use this term in the description of my invention.
I will describe herein two forms of my invention, one of which may be designated a portable device, to be carried about the person or in' a traveling-bag or trunk, to be applied by a casual occupant to a door in a room of a hotel or other house, the users occupancy of which is temporary, the other form 2 5 being adapted to be permanently applied to the door-frame.
The invention comprises a plate having prongs which may be jammed into the frame of the door, and between the door and such 0 frame, by the closing of the door to hold the plate in place, and also having a hook orhooks to receive a cam-lever, which may be turned up against the door and its frame, thereby to resist the opening of the door.
3 5 I prefer to make the plate with two hooks,
so that it may be applied to doors opening either to the right hand or to the left. In the case of the permanent device one hook is sufficient, and the plate is secured by screws 0 or otherwise permanently to the door-frame.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lever.
5 Fig. 2 is a'perspective view of the plate for use either on a right-hand or left-hand door. Fig. 3 is a view with portions of a door and its frame in horizontal section, showing the plate applied and the lever in horizontal po- Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the device in position, the lever being shown in full lines in the position it must be given in order to apply it to the plate to lock the door and being shown in dottedlines in the position into which it must be turn ed to lock the door. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the permanent plate, with the lever in three positions, it being shown in the horizontal position in partial section.
The plate a may be a piece of flat steel or other metal, having one of its ends provided with one or more teeth or prongs b, and having its other end provided with one or two hooks 0, according as the plate is designed to be used on a right or a left hand door or a door opening either way.
(1 is the lever, having one of its ends slotted longitudinally at e and provided near the outer end of such slot with a fixed pin f. The end of the lever containing the pin is provided with two lugs g, which are eccentric relatively to the pin f and constitute what I have herein termed the cams or eccentrics. The other end of the lever may be reduced and provided with an offset fingerhold 71..
In the use of my invention the plate a is placed against the door-frame at that side thereof from which the door swings clear in opening and closing, with its prongs 1) next to the said frame. As the door is swung shut its edge will strike the plate and force its prongs into the wood of the frame, as indicated in Fig. 3, so as firmly to secure the plate to the frame. The lever d is then applied to the plate, as indicated by the full-line position in Fig. 4. and by the dotted-line position 1 in Fig. 5, by engaging its pin f with the hook c of the plate, and then the lever is turned down, as in the dotted-line position, Fig. 4, and as in full and dotted line positions 2 and 3 in Fig. 5, so that one of its cams g will bear against the door and the other will bear against the door-frame, and thereby give the securer a purchase or bearingboth on the door and on its frame, so as the more securely to hold the door against being opened from the outside. The dotted arcs and arrows indicate the travel of the lever.
As shown in Fig. 5, my invention is capa- Obviously the invention is of value to travelers especially.
\Vhat I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, the door-securer, composed of a plate provided with prongs at one end which are adapted to be driven into the frame of the door upon the closing of the door thereupon, and also provided with a hook or hooks at the other end and a cam-lever slotted longitudinally at one end and provided with an eccentric fixed pin, adapted to be engaged with the hook and straddle the plate, the slotted end of the camlever forming two lugs which are eccentric to the pin and are adapted respectively to bear upon the door and upon the door-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, A. D. 1896.
