DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part ef Lettere Patent Ne. 566,063, dated August 1e, 1896. Application filed. February 8, 1893. Serial No. 461,418. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that LTHOMAS CURLEY, of Valtharn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Checks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.'
This invention has reference to improvements in that class of door-checks wherein the action of the spring by which the door is closed is retarded sufficiently to prevent the slamming of the door.
The object of the invention is to so construct a door-check in which a reciprocative rotative plunger is used for checking the action of a spring that the same door-check maybe used for either right or left hand doors.
The further object of the invention is to produce a door-check which will be compact in shape, simple in construction, and durable in operation.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the cylinder and the plunger operating therein and the combination therewith of the spring-operated arm for closing the door.
The invention also consists in certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed ont in the claim.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of the improved-door-check. Fig. 2 represents aver- -tical sectional view of the same, portions of the arm being broken away. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the bearing-pin by -which the contraction of the upper coil of the relation of the grooves in the plunger with the opening through the walls thereof and with the perforation.

In the drawings, 6 indicates a cylinder, which is generally mounted on securingbrackets 7 7 and is furnished on its interior surface with a cam-slot 8, which descends on both sides of the vertical slot 9, connecting the higher portion of the cam-,slot with the upper end of the cylinder, this slot 9 providing a passage whereby the stud of the plunger may be entered and engaged with the slot S as the plunger is inserted in the cylinder, or through which the stud may rnove as the plunger is withdrawn. The hollow plunger 10 closely fits within the cylinder and has on its outer surface the stud 11, adapted to engage the cam-slot of the cylinder. On a circumferential line with the stud l1 is the annular `concavity 12, and above this concavity is the peripheral groove 13, the concavity 12 being connected with the interior of the plunger by the circular opening 14c and the upper portion of` the groove 13 by means of the perforation 15, The plunger-bottom has a large perforation 16 located `near the plunger-wall and a central perforation `17', the upper portion of which is enlarged to form a concavity. The perforation 16 isvclosed by the spring-valve 18, secured to the lower surface of the plunger-bottoni and `having a shank which .is provided with two 7 or more transverse corrugations 19. The central perforation 17 is closed by the conical end of the valve-stem 20, which carries the disk 2l and is secured in the screw-threaded enlargement 22, extending through a screw-threaded opening in the plunger-top 23 and operated by the handle 24 or a thumb-piece. The perforation 16 l designate as the outflow and the perforation 17 as the iniiow The operating-arm 25 is furnished with a longitudinal slot 26, (partially shown in Fig. 2,) in which the perforated flanged pulley 27 is free to travel, and has a base 28, which is secured to the top of the plunger, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or sometimes to the cylinderbase, as indicatedY in Fig. 3, when the action of the parts is reversed. Secured to the base 28 is one end of a coiled spring 29, the coil of which surrounds the cylinder 6, the opposite end being secured to the base of the cylinder. To prevent the upper coil of the spring from contracting, I use abearing-pin 30, which eX- tends through the base 28 and is furnished with a transverse concavity, into which the upper coil of the spring 29 bears, as is shown in Fig. 3.
The pulley-wheel 27is journaled on a stud A, which is secured to the upper portion of a door B and travels along the slot 26 in the arm 25 during the opening or shutting of the door. The plunger-chamber is partially filled with some non-freezing liquid which has lubricating qualities, and as the plunger moves upward when rotated this liquid passes through the perforations 16 and 17 into the cylinder 6, the rotation of the plungertightens the spring 29, and, when released, this spring tends to rotate the plunger backward, and, the stud ll following the cam-groove 8, the plunger is depressed in the cylinder against the liquid and the pressure slowly forces the liquid through the perforation or iniiow 17 back into the plunger. As the ini-low can be graduatedby the end of the valve-stem 20,
the movement of the plunger may be perfeetly governed.
As the cam-groove S descends in both directions from its highest point, it is evident that the device is applicable to either aright or a left hand door. The construction shown in Fig 5 is exactly like that illustrated in section in Fig. A2, except that the plunger is stationary while the cylinder is movable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the cylinder 6 having the cam 8 and slot 9 and furnished with means whereby it may be attached in place, of the plunger lO movable in said cylinder and having the stud l1 in engagement with the cam 8, the perforations 16 and 17 and the valve 18, the valve-stem 20 carrying the disk 2l, means for rotating the plunger in a limited degree, and a spring inclosing the cylinder and adapted to eXert a reverse strain on said rotative means.
