To all whom tt may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES Soi-ILATTERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in faucets, and more particularly to that class which, when applied to a liquid-containing receptacle, will prevent any tampering with the contents thereof by an unauthorized person.
An object of this invention is the provision of a faucet having an extension formed thereon, in which is detachably secured a cap provided with a pivoted arm which is secured to a valve located within the faucet, the said cap providing a means for preventing engagement with the said arm, except through the medium of a specially constructed key.
Another objectof this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eficient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, 'this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illus* trated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a faucet constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, illustrating one position of the barrel and shell; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View similar to Fig. 2, illustrating the barrel and shell in changed position; Fig. l is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken through the key slot formed in the barrel and shell; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the key.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally a portion of a cask or other suitable receptacle, which is provided with the customary bung-engaging aperture 2, in which is located the threaded terminal 3 of my improved faucet 11. This faucet 4 consists of a body portion 5, from one end of which extends integrally the threaded extension 3, while upon the opposite end of the said body 5 is formed a depending discharge nozzle 6. A tubular extension 7 projects vertically from the intermediate portion of the body 5, and opens into the same through asuitable port 8. A partition 9 extends from one side of the opening 8 to the lower side of the body portion 5, forming therein a pair of compartments 10 and 11, which are connected through the medium of an aperture 12 formed in the said partition 9, which is of such construction that the sides thereof produce a valve seat 13, upon which is removably seated a valve 14, the stem 15 of which extends vertically, as illustrated in Fig. 1, through an opening 16 formed in the horizontal flange 17 of a shell 18, which shell is secured by means of a pin or rivet 19 to a cap 20, which is threaded, as indicated by the numeral 21, within the upper end of the extension 7. This cap 20 is provided with an annular flange 22, which is adapted to abut against the upper end of the extension 7 and limit the extent of the threaded lower terminal 23 of the cap 2O within the said extension 7. One side of the cap 20 is offset, as indicated by the numeral 24, and is provided with a recess 25, in which is located a shell 26. The outer edge of the recess 25 is offset, as at 27, to provide a means for limiting the out-ward movement of the shell 2G. The inner end of this shell is provided with a flange 28, which abuts against the inner end of a barrel 29, which is securely held against displacement by the said flange Q8 and the offset portion 27 of the recess 25. The shell in its turn is held against displacement by the contact of the inner face of the flange 2S with the exterior wall of the shell 1S.
The offset or enlargement 24 is provided with a slot 30, which alines with a slot 31. formed in the adjacent side of the shell 1S. The barrel 29 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 32, which, when the same is turned to proper position will aline with the slots 30 and 31. The flange 28, together with one side of the shell 26, is provided with a slot 33, which, when the key 34 is inserted therethrough and properaly manipulated, will cause all of the before-mentioned slots to be alined and the key inserted so that the reduced terminal 35 thereof engages the apertured end 36 of an arm 37 pivoted, as indicated by the numeral 38, to the interior of the shell 18, and upon upward movement of the said key 34 cause the valve 14 to be unseated and permit the contents of the receptacle to pass -therefrom through the discharge nozzle 6, on account of the pivotal connection between the arm 37 and the valve stem 15.
The movement of the shell 26 is limited by means of a pin 39, which passes through a groove 40 formed in the flange 2S, the opposite ends of which form stops or shoulders 41, which engage the pin upon the rotation of the said shell in either direc- Y tion.
The'shell 26 has extending therein a pin 42, which is rigidly secured in its side, and engages the groove 43 formed in the side of the barrel 29. The ends of the groove act as stops to limit the rotary movement of the barrel by contact with said pin.
The operation of the device is as follows: The key 34 is inserted in the barrel 29 until the shoulder 46 thereof abuts against the flange Q8 of the shell 26, the barrel 29 then being rotated until its slot 32 alines with the slotl 33 in the shell 26, thereby permitting the shoulder 46 of the key 34 to pass through the slot 33 in the shell 26 and into Contact with the outside of the shell 1S. The barrel and shell Q6 may then be simultaneously turned until their slots aline with the slot 31 of the shell 18, when the key may be free to engage the valve lever 37.
g The extremity of the key can extend through the various parts as far as the key shoulder will permit, because one end of the slot 32 and one end of the slot in the shell 26 are always in registry with one end of the slot 31.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be apparent that a faucet of the nature described is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a faucet of a body portion having an extension formed thereon, a valve seat located within said body portion, a valve engaging said valve seat and a stein projecting therefrom, a cap carried by the extension, a shell located within said cap, an arm hingedly secured within -the shell and pivotally connected to the valve stem, the said cap being provided in one side with a slot, means for preventing entrance to the shell, a key movable through said cap for operating this means and for engaging the arm, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a faucet, the combination with a body portion, of a valve operating in said body portion, a cap mounted on said body portion, means mounted in said cap for actuating said valve, a locking mechanism cooperating with said last named means and carried by said cap, and means whereby said locking mechanism may be actuated for the movement of the valve aforesaid. i
3. In a faucet, the combination with a body port-ion, of a valve operating in said body portion, a cap detachably mounted on said body portion, a shell carried within said cap, a valve actuating mechanism mounted in said shell and means for operating said valve actuating mechanism mounted in said shell.
4. In a faucet, the combination with a body portion, of a valve operating in said body portion, a cap detachably mounted on said body portion, said cap, a valve stem projecting into said cap, alever pivoted in said shell and connected to said stem, and means for operating said lever vertically.
5. 'In a faucet, the combination with a body portion, of a valve operating in said body portion, a cap detachably mounted on said body portion, a shell carried within said cap, a valve stem projecting into said cap, a lever pivoted in said shell and connected to said stem, a barrel mounted in said cap and abutting against said shell, a locking mechanism coperating with said barrel, and means whereby said. locking mecha,- nism and barrel may be actuated and movement imparted to said lever.
