DAVID E. HOPPER, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
GAS-COCK.
Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed January 9, 15:308. f 'zrial No. 409,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DAVID E. Horrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, Passaic county, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful. Improve This invention has for its object to provide r a gas-cock Wl'l 10h shallcombnie with its key a novel means for locking the same when closed, so as to guard against accidental or unconscious reverse turning of the, key after the same has been turned suliiciently to ex tinguish theflame. v
My invention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,-
Figure l is a side view of one form of the improved gas-cock, the key being in the closed position; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal-horizontal sectional view, the key being in the open position; Fig. 3 is an underneath view, partly in section; and Fig. 4: is an under-death view, the key being open and shown in section, I
In the drawings, referring first to Figs. 1'4=, a is the casing of the improved gascook, the same being of ordinary construction, except as hereinafter indicated, and having the usual attachment nipples b and c.
d is the key, the same comprising the usual conical plug 6 and the key proper or handle f; in the plug is formed the bore 9 which,
according to the position of the key, standsalined. with the bore h of the casing or out of registry therewith.
The plug e projects slightly from the casing, as shown best in Fig. 1, and in this projecting portion is formed a vertical notch 'i. At one side of the key and on the lower side of the casing a is cast a box j opening outwardly and also toward the key and in this box, on a pivot 7c extending parallel with the axis of the key, is pivoted a pawl if which has an inwardly projecting tooth m at the end thereof which is the nearer to the key and an outwardly projecting knob 72 at its other end. The pawl is held with its tooth normally bearing against the side of the key by means of a spiral spring it introduced into the'box and 1IL '9TPOSGCl between the outer end of the pawl and theopposed wall of the box: The
pawl Z in a horizontal plane coinciding with that 01 semi-circular downwardly projecting shoulder e on the casing, inaking of the whole structure a more compact and 1netal-saving one than would otherwise be produced, and when its tooth is engaged with the notch in the key i-xthe closed position of the latter, as shown'in Figs. 1 and 3,
it is sufliciently close to the adjoining end of said. shoulder that the latter will serve as an abutment with which said pawl may contact to prevent undue strain being brought':. n
the pivot of the pawl in further attempt-to pawl. It will be unoerst t "it upon turning the key from the o; in pOSll/iUIl Figs. Zand turn' the key after it is once locked by the 4) to the closed p -sition, (Figs. 1 and 3) the pawl snaps into the notch in the plug of the key and locks the key against movementin either direction, in this cooperating with the usual pin 19 wh1ch, when the pawl 1S engaged with the notch i, contacts with said shoulder.
In order to turn the key to the open position, where it is limited by the pin p engaging the box y, the knob of the pawl is pressed upon until its ninth leaves the notch i, whereupon the key may be turned. It will he observed that the position of the pawlrelatively to the handle of the key is such that it is practically impossible to open the key except by using both hands, thus increasing the element of safety.
I propose to ream out the bore 9 at both ends i' iereof, giving the same the shape of a double cone.
the last instant before the key is locked in the closed position, thus preventing the operator from leaving the key, thinking it is entirely shut 0E and locked because the light may have been extinguished, with the result that a subsequentbackward turning would cause leakage of the gas. i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a gas cook, the combination, wit-lithe casing, of a rotary key, said. casing having a semi-circular shoulder around the key formin'gat one end a sto .for the key in its closed position and also iaving an integral box forming a stop for the key in its open position, and a spring-actuated pawl pivoted in said box on an axis parallel with that of the The object of this is to insure the gas remaining lighted until substantially 7 key, said key having a notch adapted to be" have hereunto set my hand this twentyeilgaied by the pawl to lock the key oh:1 eighth day of December, 1907 c ose position and t e other en 0 sai shoulder being disposed close to one end of DAVID HOPPER '5 the pawl and serving as an abutment there- Witnesses:
- for, substantially as described. JOHN -D. STEWARD,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, D. BELL.
