SAFETY ATTACHMENT. rortvanvnsn To all whom t may concern` y Be it known that I,` @Hannes J. Huisnr.- WANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing yat' Williamsport,` in the county Aof, Ly@ coming and State of Pennsylvania, have -invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a safety attachment for valves.
The main object is to provide a novel improved and simplified construction of means which will hold a valve closed against accidental opening to prevent operation of the valve by children while at play, and especially operation by anyone who is not familiar with the construction, or who is careless.
Vith the above and additional objects, such as will hereinafter appear', in view, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as illustrated in accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View showing my improved valve in vertical. section and in connection with pipe fragments;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the parts of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the lock rod and means to prevent its accidental rotation.
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts for the purposes of illustration, I have shown a conventional form of valve of which 1 is the casing to which pipes 5 and 6 lead, one being an inlet pipe and the other an outlet pipe, and the valve or plug` proper being designated 5. This plug 5 is rotatable through the actuation of a handle 7 in order to establish and cut oft' communication between the pipes 5 and 6. Any suitable means may hold the valve'to its seat, for instance the conventional pins shown at 8.
The plug 5 is provided with a central vertical opening in which is slidably as well as turnably mounted, a lock rod member 9 which has an angularly extending lug 10 at its lower end provided with a recess adapted to receive a projection or lug 11 forming part of the casing 4:. Lug 10 is disposed in a recess 12 provided by bifurcating the lower extremity of the plug which extends below the valve casing as shown in Fig. 1. A portion of the opening through which the rod 9 Specicationof Letters Patent.
extendsis ,enlai'ged to provide a Lrecess 13. RodQQrjatuts 4top isprovided with serew threads'by 'means of which' a 'removable cap la is secured tothe rod and which at its` lower end is normallydisposed Tinv an en'- larged portion 15 of the opening for the rod. Surrounding the rod 9 within the recess 13 and engaging one end wall at the recess and the inner end of the cap 14, is an expansive coil spring 16 which normally maintains the recess of arm 10 in engagement with projection 11.
In operation, if it is desired to turn the valve to open position,head 14 is depressed by one hand of the operator for instance so that the angle arm or lug 10 will extend completely below the plug after which it is turned to the position suggested in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 where it will overlap the bottom of the plug and thus be held in depressed position. The valve plug 5 is now free to turn and may be turned or operated by manipulation at the handle T as usual so as to establish or cut off com munication between the pipes 5 and 6 in the usual manner. After the valve has been closed by manipulation of the handle 7, and it is desired to again lock it against accidental movement, the rod 9 by engagement at the head 14 is preferably slightly depressed and then turned so that 4the angle arm will extend into the recess 12 and its recess receive the projection 11. My improvements provide a safety valve especially useful to control the outflow of gas as the valve is apt to be accidentally turned or opened or operated by children, as when at play.
Since I have shown merely the preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope.
I claim v 1. In a valve structure, a casing, a plug turnably mounted therein, said plug eX tending below the casing and having a recess below the casing, a lock rod turnably and slidably mounted in the plug, a head on said rod, said plug having a cavity through which said rod passes, an expansion spring surrounding the rod and disposed within the cavity and engaging an end wall at the cavity and said head, said lock rod having an angle portion disposed in said recess of the plug below the casing, said portion being Patented May 21, 191m aligne-anon ined August ao,` 1916] sepia; ivd, 117,717. l y
provided with a dent, and said casing being having an angle portion disposed in said provided With a projection to extend into recess of the plug below the casing, said porsaid dent, and said lock rod through deprestion being provided With a dent, and said sion and turning movement being adapted easing being provided With a projection to 15 5 to overlap the portion of the plug below the f extend into said dent.
