Be it known that I, FRANK M. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a gas cook, and particularly to that form of gas cook known as a safety gas cock.
As is generally known, ordinary gas cocks are often sufiiciently loose to turn accidentally, and when soturned the gas which escapes through the open cock is frequently the cause of death.
In the type of safety gas cock to which my present invention relates, when the gas is shut off the key is locked by a lever and cannot move until unlocked by raising the lever, which, as will be understood, makes it possible to move the key so as to turn the gas on.
I am aware that heretofore safety gas cocks have been made, but so far as the same have come to my attention, in all of these safety gas cocks a special lock slot has been employed and a lever has been pivoted directly to the key and actuated by a separate means to normally maintain the lever in position. i v
Now the object of my present invention is the provision of a safety gas cook in which a stop pin and lock lever co-act with the faces defining the ends of the notch in the body of the cock, for ordinarily determining the extent of the rotary movement of the key, so as to maintain the key in a locked position when the gas is shut off, and also one in which, preferably, the lock lever is yieldingly maintained in position and automatically caused to move to its locked position by a unitary means, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a safety gas I cock illustrating my present invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same showing the key in the open positionof thecock. Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, showing the key in position when the cock is closed. Figs. 5 and 6 are side elevations illustrating modified forms of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, my improved safety gas cock preferably comprises a body member having a central portion 10, one end 11 of which is interiorly threaded, for making connection to the gas pipe, and the opposite end 12 of which is adapted for making connection to a gas hose or tube. As will be understood, the end 12 may be dispensed with and a suitable connection substituted for receiving an ordinary gas burner tip.
Within the central portion of the body, a socket is provided to receive a plug valve 13, through which, as is customary, there is-a passage part 14, and suitably connected to the plug valve 13 is a key or handle 15. The plug valve and handle are maintained in position with the valve within it's socket by means of a suitable screw 16 and the washers 17, as is also customary.
Opposite the screw 16 and washers 17, the central portion 10 is provided with a head 18, surrounding the adjacent portion of the plug valve, and a part of which is cut away at 19, forming the notch, the faces 20 and 21, defining the ends of which, act as stops for the pin 22 secured in the plug valve, so as to determine the rotary movement thereof in both directions, that is at one extremity, as will be understood, the cock is opened and in the other it is closed.
As shown in the drawing, when the pin 22 is against the face 21, the cock is open, and as shown in Fig. 1, when the pin is against the face 20, the cock is closed. On one side of the key or handle adjacent the plug valve the same is provided with a lug 23. This is preferably recessed centrally so as to provide for the end ribs 24: and 25, which extend transversely thereof.
26 designates a lock lever, in one face of which there are recesses adapted to receive the transverse ends 24: and 25 and the lug 23, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. Between the recesses in the lock lever 26, the same is provided with an aperture through which a screw 27 passes, and is secured in a tapped opening in the lug 23. Surrounding the screw 27, and lying against the outer face of the lock lever 26, is a washer 28, and extending between the outer face of the washer and the head of the screw is a helical spring 29.
Now, as will be understood from the foregoing description, when the safety gas cock is closed, the pin 22 will abut against the face 20, and the inner end of the lock lever 26 will abut against the face 21, these parts co-acting with these faces to lock the plug valve and key or handle in position-so that they cannot accidentally be turned to open the gas cock. On the other hand, as will also be appreciated from the foregoing description, the outer end of the lock lever 26 must be depressed, swinging the lock lever on the transverse rib 25 asafulcrum against the action of the spring 29 sufiiciently far to cause the inner end of the lever to move free of the face 21, in order that the handle and valve may be turned, and in this position, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, the inner end of the lock lever rests against the surface of the head 18, and is so maintained by the action of the spring 29.
'ieferring to Fig. 5, it will be seen that in carrying out my invention I may employ a lug 30, on one side of the handle 15, and the outer end of this lug is rounded or curved and adapted to fit into a recess provided in the under surface of the lock lever 31, through which a screw passes and is fixed in position in the lug 30. In this construction, the outer end of the lock lever or the shorter arm thereof is made at an angle to the longer arm of the lever and between the same and the handle or key, the spring 33 is employed to maintain the parts in their normal positions.
By reference to Fig. .6, it will also be seenv that I may provide the handle or key 15 with a lug 34:, against one side of which the lock lever 35 is maintained in position by means of a spring 38 extending between the same and the head of the screw 37 which passes through this portion of the lock lever and is fixed in the lug 34. The outer end of the lock lever 35, in this construction, is preferably turned at right angles thereto, and provides a thumbpiece 86, between which and the key or handle 15 a spring 39 is employed to normally maintain the inner end of the lever in its proper position. It will be understood, however, that the operation of the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is precisely similar to that hereinbefore described in connection with the preferred form of the invention, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive. It will also be understood that the screws 27, as shown in the preferred form of the invention, and the screws 32 and 37, in the modified forms of the invention, may be substituted by suitably headed pins secured in the lugs in any desired. manner, without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safety gas cook, comprising a body member having a socket therein, a plug valve fitting said socket and adapted to turn therein, a handle for the plug valve, a pin fixed in the plug valve, the said body member being provided with a notched portion, the faces defining the ends of which act as stops for the said pin to limit the rotary movement of the plug valve in both directions, a lug on the said handle, a pin extending from the said lug, a lock lever provided with an aperture through which the said pin passes freely, and means for yieldingly maintaining the lock lever in its normal position against the lug with its inner end bearing against the adjacent face defining the end of the said notch when the plug valve is closed.
2. A safety gas cock comprising a body member having a socket, a plug valve fitting said socket and adapted to turn therein, a handle for the said plug valve, a pin fixed in the said plug valve, the said body member being provided with a notched portion, the faces defining the ends of which act as stops for the said pin to limit the rotary movement in both directions of the said plug valve, a lug on the said handle, a lock lever, and a unitary means for connecting the said lock lever to the said lug and causing the inner end thereof to bear against the adjacent face defining the end of the said notch when the said plug valve is closed.
3. A safety gas cock comprising a body member having a socket, a plug valve fitting said socket and adapted to turn therein, a handle for the said plug Valve, a pin fixed in the said plug valve, the-said body member being provided with a notched portion, the faces defining the ends of which act as stops for the said pin to limit the rotary movement in both directions of the said plug valve, .a lug on said handle, transverse ribs on opposite sides of the said lug, a lock lever having recesses in one side thereof adapted to receive thesaid transverse ribs, and means for connecting the said lug and transverse ribs and causing the inner end thereof to movement in both directions of the said fixed in the said lug, and a spring extending plug valve, a lug on said handle, transverse between the outer face of the said lever and 10 ribs on opposite sides of the said 111g, a the head of the said screw.
