JOHN G. BENSON AND ANDREW c. BENSON, F I-IUTT IG, ARKANsAscHEcK-vALvE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHNC. BENsoN and ANDREW C. BENsoN, citizens of'the United states, residing at Huttig, in the county of Union, State of Arkansas, have invented a L tive while the other is operative, thus selectingthe direction in which the fluid passing therethrough is to be directed'or checked. 7
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a check valve of this character, by means of which the check valve selecting member may be readily adjusted without disturbing the parts and locked in such position by the means of an exteriorly' disposed mechanism.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete valve. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the complete valve.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the casing, which is provided with the web member 2 having the diverging portions 9 and 10, each of which is provided with a port so that the fluid may enter from one end of the casing and pass through the opposite end in either direction as desired. The web member 2 is provided with the transversely disposed rib 3 which is adapted to be abutted by the under side of the detachable or removable plug 4:, which permits access to for repairing the partsof the valve.
The hinging elements 5 and 6 are provided for the respective valves or disks 7 and 8, the valve 7 being disposed to control the port in the portion 9 while the valve 8 is disposed to control the port inthe ,portion 10, it being desirab e that one of such valves Specification of Letters Patent.
be held open and in such open position while the other valve is closed for automatic operation. Each valve is provided-with the limitingresilient member 11 securedto the To one side of the casing centrally ith'ere nally screw threaded socket 14:, for the re ceptionofthe apert'uredplug 15., At the Patented J lily 20, 1315.- Application filed June 13, 1914. .s' eriaiNo. 844,905.
. 160 outer face thereof by means'of the screw 12, andas particularlyillustrated in Fig. 3. i
- of, is provided a hole or bore 13,ithe outer 1 face of which is provided with thei t opposite. side within the valve casing ispro- I I vided a small socket 18' for the reception of the reduced end 17 0f thevalve selecting stem 16. This stem 16 is further provide squared opening or bore'20 of the valve selecting member 21. This member 21 is provided with the oppositely disposed ends 22 and 23 adapted to assume the full or dotted line positions as shown in Fig. 3, the end 23 being disposed to elevate and hold the valve 8 in its uppermost position to permit the flow of fluid from right to left as viewed with the squared portion 19 whichfits in the in Fig. 3. Thus, the stem 16 is mounted for oscillation within the plug 15 and beyond the plug it is provided with the screw threaded portion for the reception of the locking disk 26, such disk 26 being provided with a handle 27 so that the same may be manipulated to release the stem relatively to the outer face of the plug 15 so that the same may be oscillated to adjust the selecting member for, controlling, either one of the valve members 7 or 8. i
In order to manipulate the stem 16. and consequently the selecting member, the outer end of the stem 16 is reduced and squared as at 28 for the reception of the disk 29 and is provided with the operating handle 30. By
this meanswhen the locking disk 26 is released, the handle 30 may be operated to oscillate the stem 16 and consequently move the selecting member 21 to any desired position. When placed in suchdesired position, the locking disk 26 is then-manipulated, to. lock the parts in such adjusted position. By
means of the handles 27 and 30, the selecting T member 21 may be adjusted exteriorly of the casing and thus indicate at a vglance the relative 7 and 8.
position thereof as toth'e valve disks By this form of check valve as herein shown and described, the same may be readily attached to the pipes and the flap members 7 and 8 thereof be regulated so as to permit of the passage of the fluid in either direction.
A coil spring 31 is seated within the socket l8 and exerts a pressure upon the stem 19.
What is claimed is:
1. A check valve, including a casing, two oppositely swinging flap members mounted therein, and a selective flap holding member mounted transversely of the casing and in cooperative relation tothe flaps.
2. A check valve, including a casing, said casing being provided with a centrally disposedweb having two valve seats, two oppositely swinging valve disks mounted therein for controlling the seat, and a selective means mounted transversely of the casing for engaging one valve at a time to regulate the same relatively to its seat. I
3. A check valve, including a casing, said casing being provided with a centrally disposed web having two valve seats, two oppositely swinging valve disks mounted therein for controlling the seat, a stem mounted;
carried thereby for engagement to elevate one of the flap valves at a time, a locking disk for locking the stem in adjusted position, and means for manipulating the stem. In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses. JOHN C. BENSON. ANDREW C. BENSON. Witnesses:
THOMAS S. HOSKINS, Jr., H. WEAVER.
