To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT V. SoHoLL and SYLvns'rnn F. ADRIAN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, and of Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of Wisconsin, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Stove-Valve- Control Means; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for preventing accidental movement of valves, and is more particularly directed to the valves of gas stoves. Owing to the relatively exposed position of the handles of most types of gas stoves, accidental manipulation thereof by persons moving to and fro before the stove constitutes a considerable annoyance and danger.
It is therefore primarily the object of the present invention to provide a means for normally urging valves of this nature to closing position, whereby their accidental retention in open position is prevented, and it is furthermore an object to provide a means for holding the valve in open and various intermediate positions against such closing tendency, thus providing a positive control for the position of the valve at all times.
A further object resides in the provision of a valve control means which is of com paratively simple structure and capable of ready manipulation.
It is still further an object to provide a valve control means of the type described, which may be associated in a most ready manner with existing types of valve structures.
WVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a gas stove valve having our improved control means associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the upper portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the
closed position of the valve stem being indicated in dotted lines.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 5 designates the valve casing of a gas stove structure, in which is rotatably mounted the usual tapered valve head 6, transversely bored at 7 to communi cats with the bores 8 of the casing, this valve head being provided at its upper portion with a usual laterally projecting stop pin 9 engaged in a cutaway portion of the casing.
The valve head 6 is extended below the casing for securement of one end of a coil spring 10 which has its other end secured to the casing, and which normally rotatively urges the valve head to closing position, this spring also serving to retain the valve head in the casing, although if desired, a more positive retaining means of preferably conventional nature may be employed.
The usual handle extension 11 at the upper end of the valve head is, in the present instance, hollowed to form a bearing for the headed end 12 of a holding pin 18 which extends through the upper end of the valve head and this pin is adapted to abut a selective portion of a flat vertical plate 14 which is carried by an upstanding arm 15 of the valve casing and which is disposed in a position intersecting the rotative path of the end of the holding pin 13, when said pin is in extended position. The pin is normally urged to retracted position by a spring 16 within the handle 11 and may be held against the action of the spring by a pin 17 extending through a longitudinal slot 18 in the handle and interlockingly engageable selectively in a series of notches 19 in one side of said slot.
Thus, when the pin is engaged in the inmost slot 19,v as shown in Fig. 2, the pin 13 is extended for abutment with the plate 14: whereby the valve is held in full open position. Upon disengaging the pin from the notch 19, the pin is retracted from abutment with the plate 14. by action of the spring 16, and the valve head is swung to closing position by the spring 10. Engagement of the pin in intermediate notches 18 provides for retention of the valve head in various partly opened positions.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that we have provided an exceedingly simple and. readily manipulated means whereby a valve may be secured in desired positions without danger of accidental closing or opening manipulation.
What is claimed is: V 1. The combination with a valve casing and a valve head rotatably mounted therein, of means for resiliently urging the valve head to a closed position, a pin slidable transversely through the valve head, a fixed member intersecting the pathlof rotative movement of the pin, means for resiliently urging the pin away from the member, and means for quickly releasably holding the pin in engagement with the member, whereby upon disengagement of the last mentioned means the pin Will be automatically retracted and the valve plug moved to a closed position.
2, The combination with a valve casing and a valve head rotatably mounted therein, of means resiliently urging the valve head to closing position, a lateral handle on the valve head provided with a longitudinal slot having lateral extensions at one side, a pin slidably mounted'in the handle and projeeting therefrom, means resiliently urging said'pin outward, a fixed plate intersecting the path of rotative movement of the pin and means for holding said pin against sliding movement comprisin an arm extending from said pin through the slot and selectively engageable in the extensions of the slot.
3; The combination with a valve casing, a valve head rotatable therein, means for resiliently urging the rotation of the valve head in one direction, of a pin transversely slidably carried by the valve head, a fixed plate in the path of rotative movement of said pin and adapted for engagement therewith, and means for holding the pin adjustably against sliding movement relative to the valve head, whereby the valve head may be held against rotation by engagement of the pin and plate.
4. The combination with a valve casing and valve head rotatably mounted therein, of means for resiliently urging the valve head to a closing position, a pin slidable transversely through the valve head, a fiat plate extending across the path of rotative movement in the outer end of the pin, means for resiliently urging said pin away from said plate, and means for quickly releasably holding the end of the pin in engagement with the plane surface of the plate to prevent movement of the valve head in one direction, said pin being automatically retracted upon disengagement of the last mentioned means, whereby to permit the valve head to be rotated to a closed position.
