Description

@filmed `guette @met @time "ma I.
CHARLES HARRISON,4 OF vNEIN YORK, Y.
Y Letters Patent No. 85,006, dated December 15, 1868,.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLOW-CLOSING- 'V'ALVES FOR- WATER-CLOSEIT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatL I, CHARLES HARRISON, of the city and State ofNw'Yoi-k, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Cocks for Kater-Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing,- making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the said cock as it is being opened;
Figure 2 is a plan of the piston detached from the barrel; and
Figure 3 is an elevation of the piston and valve separately.
Similar marks of'reference denote the same parts.'
I make use of a hollow cup-shaped metallic piston, to act upon water in a confined chamber, and control the gradual closing of thevalve, said piston being generally ofthe character shown in Letters Patent granted to me, September l, 1868. The nature of my present improvement consists in a grooved water-way, introduced in the edge of the metallic piston, so that a leakage will be produced that allows the water to pass from one side to the other of Vthe piston, as the valve is opened or closed, so that the movement will be suiiiciently slow to allow the neces- .sary flow of water, and thevalve will not close with a tached to the hopper of the water-closet, or otherwise sustained.
The valve j' is lupon a stem, g, that is prolonged" 'metallic disk, surrounding the stem g, and 'acting against the water in the chamber n, to* control the closing of th e valve f, and prevent sudden concussion by the ram-action of the water.
In the edge of the piston m, I form a notch, as at o, that' allows the water to pass into the chamber n, as the valve is being opened, as indicated bythe arrow, iig. 1. When thefpressure upon g to open the valve f, is removed, the water gradually passes out of the chamber n, through the notch o, and allows the valve to close slowly, and without concussion.
This character of valve for water-closets is not liable to become obstructed, and the parts are strong and durable; hence the valve is not likelyto get out vof reair.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The metallic piston m, formed hollow, and provided with thenotch o, in combination with the valve f, seat d, cylinder a, and chamber rn., as and for the purposes specified.
In Witness whereof, -I have hereunto set my siguaf ture, this 3d day of September, AJ). 1868.
