Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MGGILL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC PAPER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56.587. dated July 24, 1866; antedated January 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MGGILL, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, it will be seen that the invention is clearly illustrated in Figures l, 2, and 3.
In making this fastener I take a strip of metal of the required width and thickness and cut it oft' to two inches in length. I then measure off twelve-sixteenths from one end and bend the metal at right angles at this point; then measure off the same length from the other end and bend it likewise. I now measure four-sixteenths from the angles just formed upon each of the two ends and bend said ends again at right angles outward or from each other. VVhenthis is done I simply bend down those parts which measure foursiXteenths until they lie close to the back of the center of the strip. This brings the strip into a T shape, with the metal doubled and the two ends of said strip lying in close contact to each other.
The two ends of the strip are pointed, so that they may be readily thrust vthrough several thicknesses of paper. Theyform only one hole when thrust through papers. After having been thrust through the file of papers the two ends are bent down from each other, thus tightly securing the several sheets of paper between said ends and the arms of the T.
I do not propose to confine myself to the size of fastener hereln described, as it can be made of any required size and of any thickness of metal, so that it can be readily manipulated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described paper-fastener, formed of a single piece or strip of metal bent in a T shape, the ends ofthe strip being in close oontact, and pointed so as to make only a single hole in the papers which it is designed to connect, the two ends opening from each other after passing through the papers, and contining said papers between said ends and the arms of the T, substantially as set forth.
