SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,462, dated August 11 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AMES MORAL KEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Digby, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to can-openers, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and which is also comparatively inexpensive.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved can-opener; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, a part of the device being shown in section and the section being taken on the line 2 2; and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In the practise of my invention I provide a plate or head A, which is preferably elliptical in form, and which is provided at one end with a longitudinal slot a, which extends past the transverse center thereof, and secured to or formed on the plate A at about the center thereof are two upwardly-directed shoulders or projections a, between which is pivoted a lever-handle B, the end of which is provided with a downwardly-curved extension 1), which extends through the slot at, and on the upper side of which are formed. transverse teeth 6 The sides of the slot care inwardly inclined or beveled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the end of the plate A opposite the slot at is provided with transverse teeth or serrations G on its lower side, and secured to the upper I) of the lever-handle B is forced through said head, and the plate A is depressed thereon, and by raising and lowering the handle B and at the same time shoving the plate around the head of the can a narrow strip will be out out from the head, said strip being forced through the slot at by the extension I) of the lever-handle B. In this operation the transverse teeth on the extension I) serve to prevent the device from slipping backwardly, and the transverse teeth or projections C on the under side of the plate A also assist in producing this result.

This device is simple in construction and operation, and is also comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended; and it is evident that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.

c Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A can-opener comprising a plate or head as A, having an oblong slot formed in one side or end thereof, and having a handle or lever .pivotally connected with the upper side thereof, by means of shoulders or projections which are formed at each side of said slot, said handle or lever being provided with a curved extension, which projects through said slot the side walls of said slot being also inwardly inclined or beveled, and said extension being provided with teeth on its upper surface, and the bottom portion of said plate or head opposite the slot being provided with transverse teeth or projections, and the end thereof opposite said slot being also provided with a handle which is secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
