Description

(No Model.) A J. J. BURROUGHS. I
BUTTON. No. 564,324. Patented July 21, 1896.
NORRIS warms cu. moroumq. vusumcn'nu n c UNITED STATES JOHN J. BURROUGHS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,324, dated July 21, 1896. Application filed November 11, 1895. Serial No. 568,586. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BURROUGHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buttons; and it has for its object, among others, to provide an improved button adapted for use in any and all positions in which ordinary buttons are now employed. It comprises a plate or bar having at each end a knob or button or its equivalent, the connecting-plate being preferably of thin or flexible material.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which is shown a perspective View of my improvement.
Referring now to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the plate or bar upon which the buttons or knobs are designed to be fixed. This bar may be of any suitable material, preferably some thin sheet metal, specially thin to permit of its being bent under ordinary movements of the wearer and may be of any desired shape or form.
I have shown the bar as provided at one end with a button or knob or projection H, while the bar is provided with the buttonhole or keyhole slots I, and a button J, or knob, is shown as mounted upon a short arm K, having "a right-angled offset is, terminating in the tongue 10, the right-angled portion being cut away, as seen at 10 to form a narrowed portion, and this button is applied by passing the tongue through the slot in the bar and then giving it a turn at a right angle and engaging the contracted portion of the offset in the right-angled portion of the slot. There being a plurality of these slots in the bar, it will be readily seen that the button can be adjusted to look at different distances from the fixed button at the end of the bar.
A'double button thus constructed is capable of use in various positions, and the invention is in no way restricted to its manner of use.
What I claim as new is-= The combination with a bar having a button or knob affixed thereto and having keyhole-slots, of a button attached to an arm having a tongue and a contracted offset portion adjacent thereto and between the same and the button carried thereby, the said tongue being of a thickness substantially the same as the width of the slot, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
JOHN J. BURROUGHS. Vvitnesses:
J. P. KINDRED, N. R. STEGALL.
