SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,956, dated July 14, 1896.

Be it know that we, WYILLIAM F. GRADY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and ROB- ERT S. ROBSON, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented an Improved File for Holding Sales-Slips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom- Io panying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved file applied to the cover of a salesbook. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the clamping-frame thrown back to expose the pointed pins on which the papers are to be impaled. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Our invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient file which is designed to be secured to the cover of a salesbook and used for holding the portions of sales-slips which are retained by the salesman after each sale; and to this end our in- 2 5 vention consists in a file embodying certain novel features and details of construction, as hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the said drawings, A represents a base- 0 plate, which is composed of spring metal and is preferably provided at its sides and front with extensions or clips a, which form a convenient means for attaching it to the cover B of a sales-book, said clips being bent or turned 3 5 under the edges of thecover, as shown, and clinched or forcibly pressed against its under side, whereby the plate A is securely and immovably fastened in place in such manner that it can be easily removed if desired. If

0 preferred, however, the plate A can be riveted or otherwise secured to the cover B.

The front end of the plate A is provided with a series of upwardly-projecting sharppointed pins 7), which perforate and pass 5 through the sales-slips or other papers placed thereover, thus holding them in place,'said pins being used in connection with a hinged clamping-frame to be hereinafter described. tral spring f, all integral with said plate. The outer or corner tongues dare bent at 10 to form grooves or bearings for the reception of the rear bar g of a wire clamping frame D, which is thus hinged to the base-plate A so that it can swing in an arc of nearly one hundred and eighty degrees, the bar 9 passing over and resting upon the intermediate tongues e, which thus form guards to prevent it from coming into contact with and defac ing the cover of the book, said tongues also serving to retain the bar g within its bearings in the tongues d. The bar 9 is provided at the center of its length with an offset or projection h, against which bears the flat spring f of the plate A, said offset being parallel with the side bars 0 of the frame, so that the spring f, acting upon said offset, will cause the frame D to exert a pressure upon the papers impaled upon the pins 19 and thus clamp the same firmly upon the base-plate as desired, while when the frame D is thrown over out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2, the spring f will also hold it securely in the latter position.

To the wire frame D, near its front end, is secured a fiat transverse plate 70, within apertures in which are fitted and soldered or otherwise secured to said plate tubular guards on, open at the top and bottom and of such length as to completely surround the pins b, when the plate is is brought down upon the sales-slips or papers, thus preventing the hands from being injured from contact with the points of the pins. It will be seen that the plate It presents a broad flat clampingsurface for holding the papers firmly down upon the base-plate A, and that in placing a sales-slip upon the pins 1) it is merely necessary to catch it over said pins, as the springpressure of the clamping-frame as it is thrown over upon it will force it down over the pins to its proper position, where it is firmly held, as before stated. 9 5

The above-described file is especially adapted for use on the covers of sales-books, as it is simple, compact, and easily operated, while, as its single spring f is formed integral with the base-plate, no riveting is necessary, as would be the case if a separate spring were employed.

hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a file, the base-plate A adapted to be secured to the cover of a sales-book and having at its front end upwardly-projecting pointed pins 1), and provided at its rear end i with tongues (I, and a spring f, formed integral with said plate, in combination with a wire clamping-frame D, hinged to the rear end of said plate and having its bearings in said tongues (Z, and provided at its rear end with an offset or projection 71/, parallel with the side bars of the frame and lying beneath the spring f, whereby the latter will hold the frame D when closed or when thrown back upon the sales-book cover, the plate k secured to the frame D and extending transversely across the same nearits front end, said plate k forming a clamping-surface and having tubular guards m, projecting from its upper surface and adapted to fit over and inclose the pins 1) when the clamping-frame is closed down onto the base-plate A, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.

2.
