IMPROVED ANVIL FOR MAKING HORSESHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,311, dated July 10, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT S. WILKINSON, of Pawtucket, county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and I'mproved Anvil for Making Shoes for Horses and other animals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved form or shaping anvil to facilitate the construction of shoes for horses and other animals, and more especially shoes that have heel or toe clips or raised work of any kind, and also to aid in giving metallic clamping-bands or other parts of a shoe such form as to insure an accurate fit with much less labor and care than heretofore.

The invention consists in providing an anvil corresponding in size and form to the foot of theanimal, and having two studs projecting from it, as hereinafter more fully described.

The drawing shows a perspective view of my improved anvil.

A a is an anvil having the shape of a horses foot, and has two studs, B b, projecting one from the upper and the other from the lower side of the anvil, for securing it in position, either side up, as the work changes from the top to the bottom, or vice versa. This anvil is made of cast-steel or of other suitable metal, and will be made solid for common shop use but for some kinds of shoes which are more complicated in construction I propose to make the anvil in sections, in principle like the boottree of a boot-maker, so that by withdrawing a center piece the other parts of the anvil may come out readily after the shoe has been formed. And, further, I propose to use, in connection with my shaping-anvil, a clamping-shell, to aid in forming the shoe, the said clamping-shell to be made in sections, and to be hinged togethcr, and to be operated by screws or by a lever to be operated by pressure of the smiths foot, so as to close upon and clamp the various parts of the shoe upon the anvil, like jaws of a vise; but in manufacturing by machinery these clamping-sections may be driven by in achincry. These clamping-sections may be so operated as that only a part will act at the same time, so as to give room for the hammer upon the shoe in connection therewith.

For a valuable animal a plaster cast of the foot may be taken, and the anvil receive its form therefrom, this mode not being very expensive, as the anvils once made would probably last during the life-time of the animal, and by this means a perfect fit would be obtained but with various'sizes of anvils, and with the use of some soft and elastic padding or lining, such as rubber, such mode of obtaining a fit would not be generally necessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The shaping-anvil A a, in combination with the studs or projections B b, the whole being constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
