Application led January 27, 1916.
To all t0/wm t may concern Be it known that we, FRANK KILBERG and WI'LLIAM Lnv, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the` county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to horseshoes, and the primary object of our invention is t0 provide a shoe which may be easily and quickly attached to a horses foot, without the use of nails. This object is attained by providing a horseshoe with adjustable side clamps for engaging the sides of the hoof to coperate with the toe piece of the shoe in firmly holding the shoe upon the hoof.
A further object of our invention is to provide a horseshoe fastening means wherein the parts are constructed with a view to reducing the cost of manufacture and at the same time retain those features by which safety, durability, and simplicity of construction are secured, and with suchv ends in view, our invention resides in the novel construction to be hereinafter specically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horseshoe in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of a portion of the same, illustrating one of the adjustable side clamps; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the toe portion of the shoe; Fig. 4 illustrates views of a calk that may be used in connection with a shoe, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the shoe as applied to a hoof.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a flat horseshoeshaped metallic bar devoid of the usual nail openings and grooves. The toe portion of the horseshoe has the outer edge thereof provided with an integral upwardly projecting and inwardly inclined toe piece 2 for embracing the toe portion of a hoof.
The heel portions of the shoe have depending transverse enlargements 3 provided with transverse openings 4 to receive the fiat shanks 5 of side clamps 6. The Shanks 5 have a series of openings 7 and said Shanks Speceaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
SerialNo. 74,538.
are held in the enlargements 3 by set-screws 8 or other fastening means.
The side clamps 6 have a cross-sectional shape corresponding to that of the toe piece 2 and said side clamps and the toe piece 2 may be provided with screws 9, which may be screwed into the walls of a hoof, after the shoe has been clamped thereon to coperate with the side clamps in positively holding the shoe upon the hoof. In somel instances, however, the screws 9 may be dispensed with.
The horseshoe l may be provided with the usual form of toe and shoe calks, but in Fig. 4 there is illustrated a preferred form of detachable calk l0 having a threaded stem 11 screwed into the bottom side of the shoe l.
It is thought that the manner of placing the shoe in engagement with a hoof and its utility thereon will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawings there are illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is The combination in a horseshoe, of an inwardly inclined toe piece integral with the greater portion of the outer edge of said horseshoe, dependino` entanglements at theheel portions of said horseshoe and provided with transverse openings, said clamps at the heel portions of said horseshoe as a continuation of said toe piece and movable to and from the outer edges of the heel portions of the shoe, shanks carried by said side clamps extending through the transverse openings in the enlargements of the horseshoe, and screws eX- tending upwardly into the enlargements of the heel portions of said shoe and through the shanks of said side clamps to hold said side clamps in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
