SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,672, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed July 23, 1895. Serial No. 556,898. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILGHMAN B. SNYDER, of Snyders P. 0., in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
.This invention is an improved plow, and its object is to enable the plowman to regulate the width and depth of the furrow; and it consists in the novel construction of the plow, the clevis, and the regulating-wheel attachments, and the adjustable moldboard, as will be hereinafter described, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a landside View of the plow; Fig. 2, a top plan view; Fig. 3, a transverse detail section on line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing the inoldboard-fastcnings. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line L 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail section of the clevis. Figs. 6 and 7 are details of other parts.
The standard A is provided with the usual foot A, to which the landside B of ordinary construction is bolted. The toe a of foot A is shaped to underlie the point C, which is of ordinary construction. Only its rear end is straight-edged to fit the moldboard to, but in rear of the point the toe a is formed with sockets to, to retain hinge'lugs (Z on the lower or front edge of the inoldboard D, which lugs may be so shaped that they shall lock the moldboard to the toe, while allowing the rear end of the moldboard to be swung or adjusted toward or from the standard. As shown,lugs dare claw-shaped, and retain the heads of bolts E, which pass through openings in the bottoms of the sockets and are secured by nuts, thereby firmly securing the moldboard to the toe, and at the same time allowing it to be adjusted as described.
The moldboard D is provided on its inner side with a downwardly-inclined slotted lug D, through which passes a bolt F, attached to a bracket G, bolted to the rear of the standard below the handles, and having a lip G, to which the furrow-side handle is bolted, as shown. This construction enables the moldboard to be adjusted toward or from the standard, and thus turn a wider or narrower furrow, accordingly increasing or lessening the pressure of the earth against the moldboard, and the push on the rear end of moldboard is transferred directly to the standard through bracket G, and the attachment of the handles to the bracket gives the plowman better control of the plow.
When the rear end of the inoldboard is adjusted away from the standard, it turns a wider furrow, more pressure is brought against the wheel at the landside of plow, and the clevis attachment should be adjusted to compensate for the additional strain, and stands higher above the point. -When adjusted toward the standard, it sets lower, and will turn a narrower furrow, and the pressure against the wheel on the landside is lessened and the clevis should be adjusted accordingly. The hinge connection between the moldboard and toe keeps the moldboard firmly attached in any position to which said. board may be adjusted.
The handles ll are of ordinary construction, and the plow-beam I is pivoted to the top of the standard by a bolt I, and its rear end is adj ustably fastened by a clip-bolt i to a rod 72, fastened to the handles, thus allowing the beam to be adjusted laterally, as usual.
A f iu'row-deptlrregulating whcelj is mounted on a stub-shafty", fixed to a double-armed bracket J, one arm J of which is pivotally attached to the standard and curved outward and rearward at the landside of plow to the stub-shaft j. The other arm J is curved inward, then upward beside the left-hand handle, and is vertically slotted for the passage of a bolt K, attached to the handle, as shown. By this means the wheel j can be adjusted vertically, so as to regulate the position of the heel of the plow. XV heel j also keeps the standard in upright position, opposing the lateral thrust of the earth against the moldboard, and in combination with the moldboard and clevis regulating devices prevents the plow being rocked laterally out of the furrow, and relieves the plowman of a great deal of Work. In some light earths the plow will almost go alone. \Vhen the parts are properly adjusted, a boy can run it.
The point of the plow is regulated by means of a furrow-wheel L, mounted on abar M, attached to the furrow side of beam, in front of plow, by a bolt m, bar M having a series of perforations, with either of which bolt m can be engaged to set the furrow-wheel at the desired depth.
The clevis is made of two parts P p, united by a bolt P, the parts having their meeting faces radiallyserrated, as shown, so that they can be prevented from rotating in relation to each other when bolt P is tightened. Part 19 is ring-shaped for the attachment of the trees or draft-bars, and part P is slotted to embrace the cleVis-plate Q, (of ordinary construction, attached to the end of p1ow-beam,) and is adjustably attached thereto by a bolt q, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is- V 1. The combination of the standard having a toe provided with hinge-lug-receiving sockets; with a moldboard having hinge-lugs on its lower or front end entering said sockets and an adjustable connection between the rear end of inoldboard and the standards, substantially as described.
2. In a plow, the combination of the standard, having a toe provided with sockets, and a inoldboard having hinge lugs engaging said sockets, and a downwardly-depending slotted lug on its rear end; with a bracket attached to the standard, and the bolt transfixing said bracket and engaging the slotted lug of the moldboard, substantially as described.
3. In a plow, the combination of the standard having a toe provided with sockets; with the moldboard having lugs engaging said sockets, the bolts for locking said lugs in said sockets and means for adjusting the rear end of moldboard relatively to the standard, substantially as described.
4:. In a plow, the combination of the beam, standard, and handles, and the adjustable moldboard having a downwardly-inclined slotted lug substantially as described and hinged to the toe of standard; with a bracket attached to the standard, and the bolt attached to said bracket and engaging said slotted lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the clevis-plate; with the two-part clevis attached thereto consisting of the bifurcated part P attached to the clevis-plate by a bolt; and the part 19, attached to part P by a concealed longitudinal bolt P, the meeting faces of parts P, 19, being radially serrated, substantially as and for the purpose described.
