T. HOLT.
PLOW GAGE.
No. 285,264. Patented Sept. 18, 1883;
, BY J ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE HOLT, OF LEXINGTON, TEXAS.
PLOW-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,264, dated September 18, 1883.
Application filed June 9,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE Hour, of Lexington, in the county of Lee and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Plow-Gage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention will first be described in con nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a broken rear perspective view of a plow with my improved gage attached. Fig. 2 is a partly sectional side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a guide-block employed in connecting the plow mold-board and the lower slide-plate of the gage to the plow-stock.
a represents the plow beam, having any approved handles, 1) b, and stock 0, to which stock the plowshare or cultivator-shovel d is attached at its. foot by a bolt, 6, which holds the shovel d in a recess of the face of stock 0, so that a shoulder, 0, thereof takes the thrust of the work. The fastening-bolt 0 passes through the-stock c, and through an aperture, f, of a metal block, f, which I place in a recess, g, at the back and lower end of stock 0, as in Fig. 2. This block f not only shields the stock from the wear of the nut e of bolt 0', but by its outer longitudinal rib or projection, h, forms shouldersi at each side, against which the edges of a slot, 70', of the lower connecting-plate, k, of the gage-shoe Z slide, to form a guide to and lateral support for plate k, which is of a thickness slightly less than the rib h of block f, so that the overlapping nut c of bolt 6 may be tightened without binding the plate It fast to, the stock 0, to which plate is may be tightened by an upper bolt, m, and nut m, to secure the forward end of shoe 1 atproper level or height to suit the style of plowshare with which the gage is used. I prefer to make the gage-shoe Z in wedge form, or thinnervertically at the front, where I connect the shoe to the plate 70 by any suitable hinge-joint, n, which will allow the free swing in vertical plane of the rear end of the shoe Z, which end I connect to the stock 0 by a bent bar or plate,
0, held to the stock adjustably by a bolt, 10, which passes through the stock 0, and a guideblock, q, secured thereon, which block q fits the slot 0 of plate 0 loosely, for guiding the plate, which may be firmly locked to stock 0 by the nut 1-, fitted to the threads of bolt 1).
In operation, should it be desired to substitute the plow'share d by another one, or to adjust the shoe Zfor gaging the working depth of the plow in the soil, the bolts m p are loosened, and the plates is 0 can then be raised or lowered on stock 0 to suit the plow in use or the varying conditions of the soil, and when properly adjusted the bolts m 1; may be again tightened to hold the shoe 1 firmly in place to steady the plow and hold it evenly to its work, to the great relief of the plowman and of the horses, as the plow will not dip in sandy or loose soils, and the draft-strain will be materi ally lessened because of the uniform depth of furrow cut by the plow.
It will be noted that the gage may be adjusted as desired without loosening the connection of the share (I with the plow-stock, and that when it is desired to shift or change the stock, it may readily be done by running off nut 1 and swinging the bar 0 and shoe Z forward on the hinge n and entirely free from the bolt-connections c e f of the plowshare.
My improvement is thus simple and cheap to construct, and is durable and effective in operation, making all kinds of cultivating plows more desirable and handy in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The block f, arranged in a recess, having a rib or projection, h, and provided with side shoulders, z, in combination with the stock 0 and slotted plate k, whereby the block forms a guide and lateral support to the plate, as described.
2. The adjustable bent bar 0 and the adjustable bar k, combined with the hinged shoe Z, stock 0, and guide-block f, as shown and de-' scribed.
O. KONZELMANN, W. S. DOUGLASS.
