JAMES O. TIGNER AND BURYVELL O. HILL, OF GREENVILLE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,469, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed February 18, 1889. Serial No. 300,337. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES O. TIGNER and BURWELL O. HILL, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Greenville, in the county of Heriwether and State of Georgia, jointly have invented an Improved Plow, 01 which the following is a specification.
()ur invention relates to that class of plows in which the share is attached to a shank or stock capable of swinging in a vertical plane on a pivot 011 the plow-beam to adjust the share to different angles of inclination relatively to the beam or to the ground.
The object of our invention is to secure a compact, simple, and strong organization, the several members of which, while readily adj ustable, are securely held against working strains.
The subject-matter claimed is hereinafter specifically designated.
In the accompanying drawings of our improved plow, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 an inverted plan view, of the stock, share, and connected parts.
The plow-beam A is made of a single comparatively narrow but deep piece, without cuts or breaks therein, as shown. The handles B are constructed and secured to this beam in usual well-known ways.
The stock or shank D consists of two parallel slightly-curved fiat bars C solidly united at the bottom, so as to form a shoe 0, and provided at the back with a stud or projection c. The share D, curved to correspond with the frontof the stock,is secured thereto by a through-bolt (l,- which passes through the stock and through a brace-place E 011 the back of the stock. The front or lower edge of this plate is provided with a notch or recess e, which interlocks with the stud c on the heel of the shank or stock. The share, the stock, and the brace-plate are securely locked together by a single bolt, while readily adjustable.
The plate E is connected byahinge c with a brace-bar F, having a series of perforations f on its rear end. This bar is in the central line of the stock, and its rear end fits snugly, but moves freely endwise, in a stirrup G, secured upon and extending below the plowbeam, inclining backward at an angle of about forty-five degrees. This stirrup is bolted to the outside of the beam, so as to avoid cutting it. The brace-baris secured at the desired point in the stirrup by a pin g, passing through holes therein in and through one of the series of holes in the brace-bar. The stock and share swing around theirpivot on the beam, and can be held at any desired angle thereto by the brace, as will readily be understood.
Our improved organization comprises a strong light plow shank or stock, a ready adjustment of the plowshare thereon, a readilyadjustable rigid lockingtogether of the. shank, share, and brace by a single bolt, a direct central thrust of the brace, a strong connection of the latter through the inclined stirrup with the plow-beam without weakening the latter, and awide range of adjustment of the parts.
We are aware of United States Patent No. 228,885, granted June 15, 1880, to G. WV. Gammill.
WVe are also aware that none of the devices described by us are new, broadly considered, and therefore limit our claim to the specific construction and organization herein described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and of our own invention, is
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the narrow deep plow-beam, the bifurcated curved shank embracing at its upper end the plow-beam and hinged thereto, the flat, narrow, upwardly-curved brace-bar hinged to the curved shank at its lower end, the backwardly-inclined stirrup or downhanger secured on each side of the plow-beam at its rear end and through which the curved bracebar extends, and devices for adjustably securing the brace-bar Within the stirrup.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
JAMES O. TIGNER. BURWELL O. HILL.
IVitnesses:
A. G. FLOYD, J. C. MAFFETT.
