TICKET-HOLDER FOR RAILWAY-CARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 562,120, dated June 16, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM GUSHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Ticket-Holder for Railway-Oars, of which the following is a specification.

This is a holder or clamp adapted particularly to be secured to the inner surface of the wall of a railway-car, preferably, but not exclusively, a drawing-room car; and it has for its object to relieve the passenger of the necessity of holding his ticket by providing a suitable clamp or receptacle therefor.

Perhaps the most convenient place for my device is that portion of the wall which is between the windows, although any other suitable location may be utilized.

The nature of my invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section taken centrally through a drawing-room car, showing the side wall in elevation and with my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section taken through the wall of the car and through my device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device removed from its position and with its parts separated.

At suitable places-say between the windows-there are cut horizontal recesses or openings f for the purpose of accommodating my improved ticket-holders, each of which comprises a plate which consists of the vertical portion A, of any desired shape, and provided with holes A, whereby it is secured to the wall I) just below the recess f, the horizontal fold B, the horizontal upper fold 0, produced by bending the plate back upon itself at D, and the vertical upwardly-bent portion E, and a' shield H. The folds B 0 lie within the correspondingly-shaped recess f, and the upper fold O is provided next and parallel with its outer edge with a downwardlyprojecting corrugation F extending across said fold. The fold G is a spring-fold and bears normally down upon the fold B, the contact being by means of the corruga tion F. The recess f is made of suficient height to allow of a limited amount of verti cal play of the fold C. The shield H has rearwardly-turned edges H and is secured to the wall 19 just over the recess f by means of screws in the holes h. Its bottom portion is formed at H in a straight line in order to lie next and parallel with the recess. This shield or casing covers the upturned portion E, which lies be tween it and the wall, and is thereby protected so that it cannot be tampered with. The edges H are made deep enough to allow the portion E to swing somewhat between the shield and the wall.

WVhen the device is not in use, the corrugation F rests on the fold B and the portion E is forward, away from the wall I) and near the shield.

When a ticket is forced into the mouth, it crowds up the corrugation and hence lifts the fold (J and swings back the portion E. Thus the ticket is firmly held until it is required by the passenger or the conductor.

Of even date with this application is another application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 581,443, executed by me, in which the spring-fold O is omitted, and a hinged leaf, and spiral spring bearing against said leaf and the upper end of a suitable walled recess, arranged in place thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a ticket-holder for railway-cars of the character described, the combination with the spring-plate consisting essentially of the vertical fold A adapted to be secured to the car, the horizontal spring-folds B, 0 adapted to extend into a suitable recess formed in a surface in the car, and the vertical plate E extending up from the upper fold in front of said surface; and the shield consisting of the main portion H and rearwardly-bent edges H, said shield adapted to be secured to said surface above and next to the recess and to overlap the plate E, the edges of said shield being of sufficient width to set the main portion thereof off from the surface enough to allow the said vertical plate to vibrate between the shield and the surface to which it is secured, substantially as described.
