TICKET HOLDER- I Patented Nov. 18, 1884. I
r I [HI/W270? NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. STEWART, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
TICKET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,105, dated November 18,
Application filed September 15, 1884. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in ticket-holders, to be used in connection with the rear side of the back of railway-car seats, so that a passenger may insert the end or edge Of a ticket in the ticket-holder, and then need not be required to wake up to show his ticket in night travel, an especial annoyance, for it will be just where the conductor may see it and punch or take it up as he has need; and it is also a matter of convenience as a desirable place for carrying a ticket ordinarily, instead of in a pocket, reticule, &c., where, especially with ladies, it is an unpleasant thing to keep track of and find when called for; and it consists in the devices substantially as hereinafter set forth. I attain this object by means of the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of a ticket-holder having my devices. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on a line ofw 00 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing a modified form of arranging the springs. Fig. etis a modification of Fig. 3, showing the spring F left out.
The ticket-holder is constructed with a case or frame, A, having ahorizontal slot, B, near the center, and adapted, by means of the screws 0, to be attached to the rear side of the back of a car-seat, D, without changing the structare of the back. The case has a concave surface, forming a recess, E, forming the inner surface of about a half-inch depth, more or less, and in this recess is secured two springs, F F, having their loose portions come together in the recess so as to agree at the place of their contact with the slot B in the case. (See Fig. 2.) The passenger in travel pushes the end of the ticket H through the slot B and between the springs F F, where it is held in a horizontal position face side up, and may be readily seen and punched or taken up by the conductor.
Fig. 3 shows a modified form of arranging the springs, while the principleis the same. The two springs, as shown, are secured near the edge of the case, but the one, F, has its loose edge terminate just at the slot B, while the other or upper spring, F, will have the free edge pass the slot and lap onto the side of the spring F. through the slot and between the springs, the same as in the other case, and the outer end will be pressed down to a horizontal position. (See Fig. 3.)
The spring F, it will be seen, might be dispensed with, and the ticket in that event would pass in between the spring F and the inside of the case, and be held by that one spring, perhaps, just as well.
What I- claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The case or frame A, having the concave surface, forming av recess, E, and slot B, carrying the spring F, and adapted to be attached Then'the ticket will be pushed to the rear side of the back of a car-seat, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The case or frame A, having the concave surface, forming a recess, E, and slot B, carrying the spring F, in combination with the spring F, and adapted to be attached to the back of a car-seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. STEWART. Witnesses:
