Description

(No Model.) I
J. J. WALSH.
' COMBINED ERASER, PENCIL HOLDER, AND LETTERISOALE. No. 561,635. Patented June 9,1896.
WITNESSES: INVENTOH ATTORNEYJ" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN J. W'ALSH, OF YONKERS, NEIV YORK.
COMBINED ERASER, PENCiL-HOLDER, AND LETTER-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,635, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed November 21,1896. Serial No 569,619. (No model.)
To aZZ whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. lVALsH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Eraser, Pencil-Holder, and Letter-Scale, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying dra'wlugs, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to erascrs, pencilholders, and letterscales; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device in which are combined these elements and the construction and arrangement of which is such that the device may be easily carried in the pocket and may be used in any relation in which inkerasers, pencils, and letter-scales are necessary.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical side elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing the parts in the same position, and Fig. 3 a similar view showing the pencil readyfor use and the eraser connected with the opposite end of the holder covered.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular casing A, in one side of which is formed a longitudinal slot a, which extends throughout the greater portion of the casing A, and this casing is closed at one end, as shown at a and provided at the other end with a head a", which is slightly greater in diameter than the casing, and in which is formed a slot (0, and mounted 011 this end of the casing A is a sliding sleeve 13, provided at its inner end with an inwardly-directed fiange b, which is adapted to strike against the inner edge of the head a so as to prevent the removal of the sleeve. I also provide a steel eraser D, provided with a shank (Z, which extends into the casing A, and the inner end of which is provided with an arm (1, which projects through the slot a, and mounted on the shank d is a spiral spring E, one end of which bears upon the head a and the other upon the arm cl of the shank d,
hook a on the eraser D constitute the com plete scale.
It will be understood, of course, that the graduated scale F on the casing A represents ounces and fractions thereof, and whenever it is desired to weigh a letter or similar package it is only necessary to connect the same with the hook a and to hold the device in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the weight of the article, whatever it may be, will be registered by the arm d, as will be readily understood. The opposite end of the casing A has secured thereto a tubular casing G, the outer end of which is open, and in which is placed a sleeve K, which is adapted to receive an ordinary pencil L, to the end of which is secured a rubber eraser M. The sleeve K is adapted to be mounted on the pencil and rubber eraser or the letter adapted to be inserted thereinto, and it will be apparent that the sleeve K may be reversed, so that the pencil-point will project or so that the rubber eraser M will project, as may be desired, and whenever it is not desired to use the eraser I) or the scale the sleeve B is moved down in the position shown in Fig. 8.
It will be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a simple and effective device which is comparativelyinexpensive and which is well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention, and instead of employing a single slot and scale I may employ two or three, with a scale for eachone for domestic mail, one for foreign mail, and one for plain or ordinary scale and the scales for the domestic and foreign mails may be arranged so as to weigh both first and second class matter and to indicate the cost of postage for the same, and it will be understood that an arm or projection cl must be employed in connection with each slot.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combined pencil-holder, eraser and mail-scale, comprising a tubular casing having a longitudinal slot in one side thereof, and a graduated scale at one side of said slot, a steel eraser projecting from one end of said casing provided with a shank which extends thereinto, and an arm at the inner end ofsaid shank which projects through said slot, a spring mounted on said shank, and operating to hold it within the casing, and a sleeve on the opposite end of said casing adapted to hold a pencil, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a tubular casin g provided with a slot at one side thereof, and a scale at one side of said slot, of a steel eraser which projects from the end of the casing and is provided with a shank which extends thereinto, and a spiral spring mounted thereon, said shank being provided with an arm at its inner end which projects through the slot in the casing; and the eraser being provided with a hook, substantially as shown and described.
The combination with a tubular casing provided with a slot at one side thereof, and a scale at one side of said slot, of a steel eraser which projects from the end of the casing and is provided with a shank which extends thereinto, and a spiral spring mounted thereon, said shank being provided with an arm at its inner end which projects through the slot in the casing, and the eraser being provided with a hook, said casing being also provided with a sleeve which is adapted to slide thereon, and to be extended to cover the blade of the eraser, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with a tubular casing provided with a slot at one side thereof, and a scale at one side of said slot, of a steel eraser which projects from the end of the casin g and is provided with a shank which extends thereinto, and a spiral spring mounted thereon, said shank being provided with an arm at its inner end which projects through the slot in the casing, and the eraser being provided with a hook, said casing being also provided with a sleeve which is adapted to slide thereon, and to be extended to cover the blade of the eraser, and the opposite end of said tubular casin g being provided with a tubular extension adapted to receive a tubular sleeve which is adapted to serve as a holder for a pencil, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of November, 1895.
