To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JUAN P. DORTICOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to those boxes or cases which include a square or hexagonal base having a iiap or leaf hinged'to each side and capable of being readily turned down to display samples, dac.; and my improvement consists in attaching certain special forms of holders or pockets to the inner sides of said flaps, whereby they are adapted to retain bunches of cigars in such a manner as to expose them to the best advantage, as hereinafter more fully described, and then set forth in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of my hexagonal cigar-box in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation of a portion of said box, the cap being detached and one of the leaves swung down to display its bunch of cigars. Fig. 3 is a plan of the box when completely opened, the cigars being omitted from one of the flaps and portions of two of the latter being broken away. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a portion of a four-sided box.

As seen in Figs. l, 2, and 3, the base A of my box is hexagonal and may be a single block of wood, or it may be built up of thin pieces of stuff, such as used in constructing ordinary cigar-boxes; but in either event it is desired to have a pit B in said base for the reception of a limited number of cigars. Hinged or otherwise flexibly connected to the upper part of the sides of the base are six leaves or flaps O D E F G H, the joint between the base and flaps being usually made of a thin piece of stuff I, of the kind generally used for covering the corners of cigar-boxes. These flaps are as wide as the sides of the base and are somewhat longer than an ordinary cigar, the inner surfaces of said flaps being provided with keepers c d e f g h, that assist in holding the cigars in their proper places within the box. As seen at c d 7L g, these keepers consist of receptacles made of stiff paper, closed on both sides and at their outer or free ends, but open at their inner or hinged ends; but the receptacle f is a pocket that almost entirely conceals the cigars, while the devices c e are india-rubber bands secured to the iiap E.

K is a hexagonal cap for the box.

In filling this box a number of cigars are laid loosely within the pit B, and each flap is provided with as many cigars as it can hold. All the sides of the box are then swung up to a vertical position, and the cap K being fitted in place the cigars are at once ready for-shipment. When they arrive at their destination, the retailer or salesman removes the cap K and turns each flap downwardly and loutwardly, thereby completely displaying the entire contents of the box, as seen in Fig. 3.

When the box is thus opened, the flaps stand at about the angle seen in Fig. 2, and the cigars are removed by drawing them toward the center of the base A, the end pieces of the pockets preventing the cigars slipping off at the lower edges of said iiaps.

It is evident a different brand of cigars may 8o be applied to each flap and the pit B can be replenished as often as it is emptied. In the square box seen in Fig.. 4 said pit is empty, and the only cigars left in said box are those contained within the pocket d.

I claim as my invention* The within-described specific construction of cigar-box, which construction includes a base having a number of similar sides; flaps or leaves jointed to these sides; holders se- 9o cured to the inner surfaces of said flaps, which holders are closed at their sides and outer ends, but open at ltheir inner ends; and bands for retaining bun ched cigars within said holders, all as set forth.
