Description

'J. W.' PAIGE.
Coal Stove.
No. 56,148. Patented July 3, 1866.-
I Iavemfarwww 4 M N. PETERS. Fhola-Ulhagmwer. Wnkmgfnn, DJ;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J W. PAIGE, OF CORNING, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND J. L. PAIGE, O
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,14 8, dated July 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. PAIGE, of Coming, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful mode of burning the smoke and gaseous substances generated by the burning of coal, especially bituminous coal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which the drawing is a vertical central section of my invention. The black arrows indicate the direction of the draft and the red ones the atmospheric-air currents.
Economy in the use of fuel being the prime object at the present time, it becomes necessary to utilize every particle that is susceptibleof combustion by means of a practicable degree of heat; and the object of this invention is to provide a stove possessing such advantages.
The nature of the invention consists in such an arrangement of the draft-plate in relation to the fire-pot as shall cause a thorough concentration of the gases at the point of combustion and an intermixture therewith, at about the same point, of a suitable proportion of atmospheric air to perfect the conversion of the carbonic oxide to carbonic-acid gas, there by rendering all the other gases combustible.
It also consists in the application of a radiating-plate just above the concentrating orcombustion plate. 7
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it in detail.
The casin g of the stove is composed of the base B, a section, 0, containing the fire-pot I, and the upper section or cylinder, D. These parts may be made of any desired form or size.
The fire pot P may be made in skeleton form, as represented in the drawing, or its vertical portion may be made close and have an open-grated bottom. It is supported upon the cross-bars b, and is kept upright and central by three or more braces, d. One of these may be projected through the casing O and extended far enough to be used as t a shaker for the fire-pot, or the pivot a may be squared at the end to receive a crank for that purpose.
opening, as before mentioned, in which case the air admitted through the openings 0 would only supply the draft, and it would be necessary to provide another regulator above the base of the fire-potto supply the atmospheric air to the gases.
The plate E may be made adjustable vertically, if desired, so as to increase or decrease the area of the annular space between it and the upper edge of the fire-pot by havingit rest upon lugs on the case 0 and providing its lower edge with as many inclined planes and a clampingbutton projecting through the case, whereby it may be turned either way and its adjustment secured.
The coal is supplied through the door H, and the ashes are caught by the pan J.
Section C may be made to constitute the fire-pot and the atmospheric air admitted beneath the concentrating-plate E, and a similar result produced as in the present construction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the concentratingplate E, in combination with the fire-pot P and the outer case of the stove, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The arrangement of the radiating-plate F in relation to the concentrating-plate E,
substantially as and for the purposes specified.
