Description

gotten gtatrs gaunt @ffira To ALL'WHOMIT'MAY'CONGERN:
D. HATTAN, OF 'ZANES'VILLE, O HIO.
Letters Patent life/80,731, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIREPL AGES.
Be it known that I,'.D. HATTAN, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Fire-Back; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in ,the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the backs of fireplaces.
And it consists in arranging a horizontal-sliding plate therein, and providing for the admission of cold air, whereby a more perfect combustion of the gases which are evolved from the fuel is obtained, and fuel thereby economized. v
The drawing represents a vertical section of a fireplace, constructed according to my invention.
A is the fire-.box or place for the fuel.
B represents the flue, through whichthe smolie and products of combustion pass to the chimney.
G is a sliding plate in the back, D, of the fireplace. i
E represents an air-tube, placed directly-below the plate G.
g.is an angular wing or flange on the plate, G, for convenience iii-moving the plate back and forth.
h is thethroat of the flue, which may be increased or diminished in area as the plate G is pushed hack'or drawn out,-thereby deflecting more or less of the heat, and throwing it into the room.
The current of air which passes through the tube E mingles with the heated gases which are ascending,
and by giving a new supply of oxygen to those heated gases, a new combustion .is produced, and a'great portion of the ascending carbonic-oxide gas is consumed, and the. quantity of heat is greatly increased thereby.
By the ordinary method of combustion in fireplaces or fir'e-grates a large percentage of the fuel passes up the chimney unconsumcd, for the want of an additional supply of air properly applied.
This invention meets the difficulty efi'ectuall'y, As the heated gases impinge against the plate G, they meet with a new supply of air, and mingle therewith, and are, to a good degree, consumed, the heat is increased, and fuel saved.
- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a fireplace-back provided witha sliding plate, C, one or more air-tubes, E, arranged I in 'and through the back, beneath the plate, substantially as setrfo'rth.
' D. HATTAN.
