' LAP-ROBE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,961, dated May 26, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CASPER ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Stone City, in the county of Grant and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Robes for Sleighs or other Vehicles; and I do declare 'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a' part of this specification.

The special object of the invention is to make a lap-robe for sleighs or other vehicles by which vin cold latitudes the person may be thoroughly protected from the weather when the thermometer is many degrees below zero.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the lap-robe open, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing it closed. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the spring, which is inclosed between the layers of the robe.

In the drawings, A represents the lap-robe, which may be made of layers of quilted fabric, woolen blankets, or tanned skins. The sides of robe are made to interlap, then closed at the bottom, and sewed up from a to a. This leaves the lower end in the form of a short bag to receive the feet, which will be thereby eftectually protected from the cold. That portion of the robe above the bag is held closely around the person or persons by a spring B, arranged between the layers thereof. This spring B has the longitudinal vertical portion b bent to conform to the shape 01": a person when sitting on a chair or other seat, while the horizontal circular arms I) b serve to hold the robe around the body and lower limbs. I preferably use Warm capes C to muffle the neck and project over the upper part of the body, thus covering and protecting the hands of the driver while he is holding the reins.

Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

A lap-robe, for sleighs or other vehicles, consisting of two layers or more of the material specified, with overlapping sides closed at bottom and sewed up from a to a, and provided within the layers with a spring B, the latter consisting of a longitudinal back strip 6 bent to conform to the sitting posture of a person and the two horizontal curved arms 12 b to hold the robe as shown and described.
