JOSEPH O. WIOKERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLACKlNG-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,877, dated May 26, 1896.
Application filed August 21, 1895. Serial No. 559,985. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH CHARLES Wick- ERs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushes, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to blackingebrushesor daubers; and the object of the same is to provide a blacking-brush which is constructed with a reservoir for holding a quantity of liquid blacking, which may be supplied as needed to the bristles, so that a separate bottle of liquid blacking is not required.
My invention consists of a blacking-brush or dauber for liquid blacking, comprising a reservoir provided with a hollow handle, a head provided with bristles and adapted to be held in an annular ange on the reservoir, means for closing a discharge-opening in the head, stirrers, a plug or other closure for the end of the handle, and a guard-cap placed over the bristles and seated against the eXterior of the reservoir, all as hereinafter clearly described, and then particularly stated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my blacking-brush. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4: is a detail section, partly in elevation, showing the valve open.v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an annular reservoir, from one side of which projects a hollow handle B. The liquid blacking flows through the central discharge-opening C in the head C onto the bristles C2, retained in the head, the latter being held firmly by friction or by glue in an annular iiange A', projecting downwardly from the reservoir, and being seated against an inner annular shoulder A2 on the reservoir. The outer end of the handle receives a screwplug D, which is provided with a knob CZ and from which projects into the handle a shank d', furnished at its extremity with a scraper blade cl2. Through a central screw-threaded opening in the top of the reservoir A works a screwthreaded spindle E, which is tipped with a knob c and which at its lower end carries a dished valve E', adapted to seat upon the brush-head C and to close the discharge-open- Ying C when the supply of liquid blacking to the bristles is to be cut oif. In order to charge the reservoir, the plugD is removed and the ,liquid blacking poured through the handle thereinto, while if the passage through the handle becomes stopped up to any entent a clear passage is made by working the scraperblade cl2 around in it. For the purpose of enabling a free flow of liquid to the bristles a scraper-blade F is secured to the lower end of the spindle E and projects into the discharge-opening C', so that by a rotary movement it can remove any clogged matter from the same. Should the blacking be a little thick or require stirring, so as to flow more freely out of the reservoir, the spindle is rotated, thus moving stirrer-blades F', which radiate from the spindle, around in the reservoir.
When the brush is not in use, care should be taken that the valve be closed, after which a guard-cap Gis placed over the bristles, with its rim or edge resting rmly against the exterior of the reservoir. Before placing the guard-cap in position, however, the ring g, which embraces the bristles, is slid down from its position against the head, to which position it is moved when the brush is to be used, toward the tips of the bristles, so as to compress them and enable the ready application of the guard-cap without catching against the projecting tips of the bristles.
The reservoir, handle, and guard-cap are preferably made of aluminium; but they, as well as any of the other parts, can be made of any suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` A blacking-brush, composed of a reservoir, having a handle provided with an annular iange, a head provided with bristles and se cured in and by said flange, a spindle extend- -ing through the reservoir and provided with a valve for closing a discharge-opening in said head,andradialstirrer-blades projecting from said spindle, within the reservoir, substam tially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOSEPH C. WICKERS. Witnesses:
PAUL GOEPEL, GEORGE W. JAEKEL.
