Description

{No Model.)
G. HICKS. COMBINED GURRYGOMB AND SINGEING DEVICE.
Patented May 5, 1896.
ffibme f6 UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE HICKS, OF XVARSAW', MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 GEORGE M. LATTIG, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBlNED CURRYCOM B AND SlNGElNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,580, dated May 5, 1896.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, GEORGE Hicks, :1. citizen of the United States residing at \Varsaw, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvcmcnts'i'n eurrycombs, and especially to a combination comb and singeinglamp which is fastened to the back of the comb and is designed to singe the hair of an animal as it is being groomed and leave the coat any length desired by causing the blaze from the lamp to be directed against the hair at the proper angle.
A further aim of my invention resides in the construction of a combination currycomb and singeing device containing an oil-receptacle carrying a wick, which is preferably of a width equal to the width of the oil-tank and adapted to be fed through an inclined aperture'which will cause the blaze coming from the wick to be deflected in the direction of the hairwhich is to be singed, a suitable proj ectin g portion of the receptacle serving as a guard to prevent the wick from immediate contact with the hair, the edge of the said projecting portion being extended over only a portion of the length of the plates having the teeth and disposed at an angle of preferably forty degrees,whicl1 will direct the blaze against the hair at the desired angle while the operator holds the device in the position assumed during the currying process.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be. hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I clearly' illustrate my invention in the accompanyingdrawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings simi- Application filed February 18, 1896. erial No. 579,761. (No model-l lar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of. the com- I bination ourrycomb and singeing device. Fig. .3 is a central vertical section through the device; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the upper row of teeth, the wick-aperture, the wheels for raisingthe wick, and the upper curvedend of theoil-tank.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an oiltank, which is mounted on the handle B, and is provided with the filling-aperture G, having a screw-cap D. The upper portion of the said oil-tank is contracted and outwardly curved and terminates in the elongated aperture E, extending the width of the tank, and through which is fed a wick F. A shaft G, which is mounted in the side walls of the tank, carries a series of toothed wheels II, disposed in the path of the wick, and provided to regulate the same. A portion of the contracted end of the tank on the comb side of the device is extended, as seen at L, providedto prevent immediate contact of the wick with the hair of the animal, and also forms a rest for the wick. It will be noted that the contracted walls of the tank are inclined at an angle, so
that the blaze may be directed against the hair of the animal while the comb is held in the position assumed while grooming the. horse.
The teeth of the currycomb are of the wellknown construction and are attached in pairs to the broad side of the tank, as seen at N. If.preferred, the two upper rows of plates M may be provided with teeth, while the other plates may be left straight.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; As an improved article of manufacture, a curryeomb having a si'ngeing device attached thereto.
2. A combination currycomb and device for singeing, consisting of an oil-receptacle mounted on a suitable handle, currycombplates attached to the broad side of the said receptacle and a wick disposed at an angle within the receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
said receptacle being ccntra-cteii and K'fBf at an angle, a- Wick carrictl in an a-per therein, the Wall of the contracted end w ll cent to the said plates be'ng' ntencled beyond its opposite Wall to form rest fer the nick. substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afi); my signatni'n in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE HICKS.
