C'URRYCOMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914.
Application filed June 10, 1913. Serial No. 772,862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLOYD NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chandler, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Currycomb, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to curry combs, and aims primarily to provide a comb of this character embodying means for cleaning hair and dirt from the teeth.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved comb of that character, which shall be so constructed and operable to conveniently and efficiently clean the hair and other extraneous matter from the teeth, and which may also be employed as a scraper, when desired.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of the nature indicated which shall be improved generally in its construction and utility, in order that the device may be of greatest simplicity, and inexpensive in construction, consistent with the highest degree of efliciency, convenience and serviceability.
WVi-th the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in. the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved comb. Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal cen tral section thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the improved comb, taken on the line of Fig. 1 with the spring in contracted position. Fig. 4 is a f- 'agmental front view.
In carrying out the invention, reference being had in detail to the drawings, there is provided a main frame, which will be termed the comb frame, and which embodies a U-shaped bar 2, having a rod 3 terminally riveted to its ends. The intermediate portion of the bar 2 and the rod 3 form the cross members connecting the sides or arms of the member 2.
To the main or comb frame, is secured a suitable handle t which has a forked shank secured thereto and attached to the frame. This shank embodies themain portion or tang 5 engaged within the respective end of the handle and the branches or arms 6, the shank being of Y-shape with its crotch riveted to the central or intermediate portion of the bar 2, and with its terminals riveted upon the bar 2 adjoining its ends, or ad joining the cross bar 3. The main portion or shank proper 5 is offset upwardly to con veniently position the handle 4 with respect to the main or comb frame. To the side members of the said frame, or the arms of the bar 2, are secured the channel members '7, which are of U-shape in cross section. The backs or intermediate portions of the channel members 7 are riveted at their ends to the side members of the comb frame, the flanges depending from the said frame, and lying in parallel planes with respect to each other. The edges of the flanges 8 are toothed, as at 9, in order that the said channel members provide a series of parallel comb flanges or blades. In connection with the said main or comb frame, there is employed a supplemental frame, which will be termed the ejector frame, and which embodies the side bars 10, disposed adjoining or working against the respective ends of the channel members 7. The bars 10 are connected by a yoke or arch 11, the..ends of which are bent outwardly or provided with feet, riveted to the central portion of the respective bars 10. The forward or outer ends of the bars 10 are also preferably connected by a cross strip 12, which has its ends or terminals riveted upon the forward ends of the said bars.
The supplemental or ejector frame carries the cleaning or ejecting members, which are in the form of plates 13 and 13 riveted to the bottoms of the side bars 10. The plates 13 are terminally riveted to the bars 10 and are disposed between the flanges r, of the respective channel members 7 it being observed that one of the plates 13 is disposed between the flanges of each channel member, and that one of the said plates is disposed between the respective flanges of each pair of channel members. The plates 13 are riveted to the end portions of the bars 10 adjoining the outermost or remote flanges. The plates 13 and 13' are providec 'ith the angular edge portions 1% forming flanges, the free edges of which contact with the sides or faces of the flanges 8 under normal conditions. The cleaningor scraper flanges 1 1 of each pair converge downwardly, or toward the teeth 9 of the comb flanges or blades, so that the free edges of the flanges 14 contact solely with the comb flanges or blades. It will be noted that the basal portions of the flanges 1 1 are spaced from the comb flanges or blades. The flanges 14: are under tension in order that their free edges will be yieldingly held against the respective sides or faces of the comb flanges or blades.
In order to conveniently actuate the ejector frame, an arcuate lever 15 has its branches or arms fulcrmned upon the yoke or arch 11. To thus fulcrum or pivot the lever 15 upon the yoke, the intermediate portion or crest of the yoke is provided with reduced and rounded bearings 16 adjoining the upright portions of the yoke, the branches or arms of the lever fitting upon the bearings 16, and having malleable fingers 17 bent under the bearing points 16 to maintain the lever in proper position. The free ends of the lever 15, or the branches or arms thereof, have pivoted thereto the re spective links 18, and these links are in turn pivoted to the cross bar 8 of the main or comb frame, the respective ends of the lin {S 18 being preferably bent or looped around the cross rod 3. The lever 15 is provided at its intermediate portion with an upwardly offset thumb piece 19, which is adapted to swing toward the shank of stem. 5 when the thumb piece 19 is manually depressed.
The eject-or frame is normally raised, with respect to the comb frame, by means of a guide pin 20 having a base or foot piece 21 riveted upon the intermediate channel member 7, with its free or upper end working through an aperture 22 provided in the central portion of the yoke 11, a coiled wire spring being disposed around the pin 20 and being compressibly held between the base 21, or the respective channel member of the comb frame, and the yoke 11 of the ejector frame. Thus, the expansive tension of the spring 23 will. ordinarily tend to raise the ejector frame, so that the teeth 9 of the comb flanges or blades, will be projected be yond the edges of the cleaning or scraper flanges it. The device as thus constructed may be readily and LlIIGXPGllSlYQlf r manufactured and possesses other advantages, as will be apparent.
In use, when the lever 15 is free, so that the teeth 9 are exposed, the device may be employed in the usual. fashion for currying the horse or other animal. ll hen the teeth 9 become clogged with hair or other foreign matter, the teeth may be readily cleaned, this being aceonnplished by depressing the lever 15 by placing the thumb upon the thumb piece 19 and drawing the thumb piece downwardly or toward the handle. This motion of the lever will cause the ejector frame to be slid downwardly, whereby the edges of the cleaning or scraping flanges 14 will move over the teeth 5) to eject any hair, dirt or other matter clingingto the teeth. hen the ejector frame is thus depressed, against the tension of the spring 23, the edges of the respective pairs of flanges 14; will contact with each other over the teeth 9, as will be clearly apparent by reference to Fig. 3, so that the said flanges may be employed as scrapers, whenever desired. When the flanges 14 are employed as scrapers, it will be observed that no hair, dirt or other extraneous matter may work between the edges of the flanges 1.4-. which is highly desirable. The teeth 9 are thus protected during the use of the device as a scraper and when the lever 15 is released, the ejector frame will be retracted, under the tension of the spring 23, so that the teeth 9 will. again be pro jected.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed is 1. ln a curry comb, a comb frame, comb blades secured thereto, an ejector frame including side bars working against the re spective ends of the said blades and a yoke connecting the intermediate portion of the side bars, cleaning flanges attached to the side bars and cooperating with the comb blades, a spring disposed between the yoke and comb blades to raise the ejector f nine, and a lever fulcrumed to the said yoke and l inked to the comb frame.
2. In a curry comb, a comb frame embodying side members and cross members connecting them, a handle attached to one cross member of the comb frame, comb blades secured to the side members of the said frame, an ejector frame embodying side bars working against the respective ends of the said blades and a yoke connecting the interme diate portions of the said bars, cleaning flange attached to the said bars and cooperating with the comb blades, a guide pin carried by one of the comb blades and passing through the yoke, a coiled spring disposed on the said pin to raise the yoke, an arcuate lever having its branches fulcrumed to the yoke and having a thumb piece at its intermediate portion cooperating with the handle, and links connecting the free ends of the lever and the other cross member of the comb frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, i have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
LLOYD NOBLE. lVitnesses T. S. Hannis, 0. F. HAYES.
