Description

W. W. HARRIS.
CURRYCOMB.
APPLICATION man MAY 18, 1916.
Patented July 31, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER W. HARRIS, OF BROWNSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNQR T0 HARRIS CURRY- COMB 00., A CORPORATION OF OREGON.
CURRYOOMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 191 7.
Application filed May 18, 1916. Serial No. 98,240.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. Harms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownsburg, in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Currycomb, of which the followlng is a specification.
My invention relates to a curry comb having movable combs proper, and consists of means for effectively wiping the combs for cleansing purposes, a head of novel construction carrying said combs, novel means for connecting the wiping members with the back of the comb, a lever for operating said head adapted to cause the latter to move true, avoiding clogging of the combs proper in the wiper members, means for strengthening the joint of the back of the comb adjacent to the tang of the handle, and other details as will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the im portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a curry comb embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof on the line 3-3 Fig. 1, the comb being in open condition.
Figs. 4 and 5 represent transverse sections of detached portions.
Fig. 6 represents a transverse section on the line 66 Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of a portion of one of the wiper members.
Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section of the back of the comb, and of portionsof the wiper members thereon.
Fig. 9 represents a longitudinal section of portions of the head, back wiper members of combs proper of the device.
Fig. 1 0 represents a perspective view of a brace member employed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates the back of the curry comb, and 2 the handle thereof, the latter being connected with a tang asusual in such cases. Intermediate of said tang and back is the neck 3 which connects said parts. i
The back 1 is provided with transverselycxtending tongues 4 which are punched out of the material of said back and turned down therefrom, as most plainly shown in Fig. 8.
' In the spaces in the back between said tongues are the transversely-extending bars 5 whose sides are turned down forming the tongues 6, the latter being parallel with the tongues 4 with spaces between them to receive the combs 7, which extend downwardly from the plates 8, said combs being adapted to play in said space between the tongues 6 and 4, the latter being the wipers of the device for said combs, .as most plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 9.
In order to secure the bars 5 to the back 1, the ends of the former are provided with lips 9 which are passed through openings 10 in the .side rims of the head and turned over said rims and clenched down thereon, thus firmly connecting said bars with said head and avoiding riveting for such purpose.
The plates 8 extend in transverse direction and are connected with the longitudinally-extending plates 11., while said plates 8 form the movable head of the curry comb.
In order to secure the comb platesS to the plates 11, the latter have lips 12 punched out therefrom, and the end portions of the former have openings 13 therein, the lips being passed through said openings and clenched on the undersides 0f the same on said plates 8 forming a firm and practical connection for said plates 8 and 11 and avoiding riveting for such purpose.
14 designates ears which are punched out of the material of the central plate '8 and turned up therefrom as integral members thereof, said ears having connected with them the lever 15 employed for operating the movable head of the brush, said lever having intermediate of its length the turned down ears 16 which are mounted on the ears 17 which are punched out of the material of the rear end of the head 1 and turned up therefrom as integral members of said head.
A pin 18 is passed through the ears 17 and 16 forming the axis of the lever. The forward end of said lever is formed with the bifurcation 19 whose side limbs 20 are connected by the pivot 21 with the ears 1 1 on the central plate 8 of the movable head of the comb.
In order to hold the head in closed or operative position, as in Figs. 1 and 9, I employ the spring-22 which has one end connected with the neck 3 of the back 1, and its other end bears upwardly against the handle end of the lever, the effect of which is evident.
The comb may now be employed for ourrying as usual, and the curryings, dust, dirt, etc, may be removed by operating the head of the comb, whereby the combs 7 move through between the tongues 4., see Fig. 3, said tongues thus acting as wipers for the combs and cleansing the latter in an effective and practical manner, without necessitating the subjection of the comb to blows which batter and injure the same.
In order to strengthen the joint or bend 23 between the neck 3 and adjacent portion of the back 1, I employ the angle brace 2 1 and secure the limbs thereof on said back and neck by the rivets 25 and 26 respectively. The front limb of said brace enters freely between the ears 16 of the lever 15 assisting to prevent side motions or twisting of the latter.
Attention is directed to the fact that the bifurcation or fork 19 of the lever 15 spreads the front of the latter, whereby the connection of said lever with the movable head of the comb is on opposite sides of the central plate of said head, thus causing an equal distribution of the lifting power of the lever on said head and assisting the latter to move true in raising the head and cleansing and wiping of the combs, 7 and returning of the same, so that there will be no amming or clogging of said combs in the spaces between the wiper tongues & and 6.
The upper faces of the bars 5 have therein the depressions 27 which when the head is in closed position are adapted to receive the lips 12 of the comb plates 8, and so permit said head to be seated to full extent flat on said bars.
On the underside of the handle end of the lever 15 are the downwardly extending lips 28 between which is the upper end of the spring 22, the same being freely embraced by said lips, thus assisting to prevent lateral motion or shifting of the spring.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a curry comb, a back, tongues on the latter, a plate on said back, means for connecting said plate and back, tongues on said plate, the adjacent tongues of said plate and back being comparatively parallel with a space between them, a movable head on said back, a comb on said head, said comb occupying freely said space, and an operating lever for said head, said head having thereon a plurality of ears projecting outwardly therefrom, said lever having a bifurcation whose limbs are pivotally connected with said ears.
2. In a currycomb, a back, a comb proper, a movable head on said back adapted to carry said comb proper, a lever pivotally mounted on said back and pivotally connected with said head and adapted to 0perate the same, bearings for said lever on said back, said bearings being composed of upwardly projecting ears integral with said back, a pivot in said ears engaged with said lever, a handle on said back with a curved tang, said lever having a curved portion, and a spring secured at one end to said curved tang and its other end bearing loosely against the under side of the free end of said lever.
3. In a currycomb, a back, a movable head, a handle portion, and an angle brace at the junction of said port-ion and back, said brace being secured to both said portion and back, a comb and wipers and a spring having one end secured in position by the means that secures said brace to said handle portion to hold the head in closed position.
4. In a currycomb, a back having a neck extending therefrom, an angle brace at the junction of said back and neck and secured thereto at opposite sides of said junction, a movable head embodying a comb pivoted on said back, tongues forming comb wipers, and a spring having one end secured to said brace by the means which secures the latter to the neck to hold the head in closed position.
5. In a currycomb, a back, tongues on the latter, aplate on said back, means for connecting said plate and back, tongues on said plate, the adjacent tongues of said plate and back being substantially parallel with a space between them, a movable head on said back, a comb on said head freely occupying said space, an operating lever for said head, said head having thereon a plurality of ears projecting outwardly therefrom and said lever having a bifurcation whose limbs are pivotally connected with said ears, and a spring carried by said back and bearing against the under side of said lever.
6. In a curry comb, a back, a movable head thereon, a comb proper carried by said 5 head, an operating lever for said head mounted on said back and pivotally connected with said head, the upper face of said head having depressions adapted to receive lips on said comb and a spring on said head 10 bearing against said lever and adapted to return the latter, and consequently said head to normal position, said lever having thereon depending lips which freely embrace the adjacent portion of said spring, preventing lateral shifting of the latter.
