Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLE JOHNSON, OF LA OROSSE, IVISOONSIN.
KNlFE-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,333, dated April 28, 1896.
Application filed August 8, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, OLE JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved knife and scissors sharpener.
The object of the invention is to provide a device that shall be very neat and compact and easily carried about the person.
Another object is to provide a device in which the filings will not interfere with the operation of the device, and a still further object is to provide a sharpener in which the file, a sharpening-tool, can be changed or reversed to present four different faces.
With these objects in view it consists of a small cast-iron base, having a transverse recess near the center, a file arranged in said recess, and a spring for holding the file within said recess.
The invention consists also in providing a slot or groove beneath the recess to receive the filings; and the invention consists, finally, in the peculiar construction of the several parts and their novel combination or arrange ment, all of which will be fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sharpener, and Fig. 2 is .a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
In constructing a sharpener in accordance with my invention I employ a small cast-iron base-piece or support A, supported upon the legs a a, and at the center of said base or support is made a transverse V-shaped recess Serial No. 55 8,580. (No model.)
B, and at the bottom of said recess is produced a slot or groove B, providing a slight ledge or shoulder B A file or abrading-tool O is arranged within the recess B and rests upon the ledge 13*, and to securely hold said file in place I attach a spring D to the top of the base or support and have its free end bear upon the upper edge of the file to hold said file in place. This file is out upon both sides,.so that each face can be used, and should one end become worn more than the other it can be taken out and reversed to present the better end or face. The file can also be adjusted to Various angles to suit the amount of edge desired. In operation the blade to be sharpened is drawn back and forth across the file and the opposite face of the recess acts as a guide for said blade. The filings gather in the slot or groove below and hence do not interfere with the sharpening of the blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a knife-sharpener, comprising a base-piece or support A, having a central transverse V- shaped recess B, said recess having a slot or groove B at the bottom, and having a ledge or shoulder B above said bottom, a reversible file or tool 0, arranged within the recess B, and resting upon the ledge B and the spring D, attached to the top of the base or support, having its free end bearing upon the upper edge of the file, which projects a short distance above the face of the base or support, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLE JOHNSON.
