SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,186, dated April 28, 1896. Application filed September 25, `1895. Serial No..563,657. (No model.)

county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl-l vania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Attachments to Bedsteads for Cradles, Cribs, Hammocks, dto., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our'invention consists of a novel construction of supporting device or attachment for cradles, cribs, hammocks, dac., whereby the latter can be readily secured to any suitable support, means being provided for readily attaching the supporting device to a side of a bedstead or other article, and also for readily removing the cradle, dto., from the attachment when desired, and for enabling the cradle, rbc., when not in use, to be swung under the bed.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

C designates one member of the device B,

the same consisting of the member or plate F with the hook D, which embraces the side of the rail of the bedstead, and the substantially horizontal portion E', which embraces the top, said plate F being provided with the ears G, which serve as ways. H designates a threaded stem or stud attached to said member or plate F, which is engaged by the thumbnut J, said stud H passing through a slot K of the limb L of the outside plate or member of the clamping device B, said member having 6o a hook M engaging the under side of the rail.

N designates a boss or lug which projects from said limb L, and has Vpassin g therethrough the rod or stem P, which serves as a journal, and is held in position relative to said boss by the nut Q. R designates collars attached to said journals P, which serve as bearings,throu gh which collars pass the limbs orjournals S of the upright members T, which are tubular and serve as bearings for the 7o stems U, which depend from the arms D, said journals S being held in position by means of the nuts V, and the springs WV interposed between said nuts and the adjacent ends of the collars R.

The contour of the arms D and E will be understood from Figs. l and 4, the upper eX- tremity of each arm having a neck Y, on which is supported the sleeve X, which is held in positionby means of the nut Z, said sleeve 8o X having attached thereto by the swiveled hook DH the crib, hammock or cradle A, to which reference has heretofore been made, whereby said crib. dto., can be readily swung by a person lying in bed. The operation is as follows: The parts be ing in assembled position it will be apparent that the cradle will normally appear as shown in said Figs. l and 4, the device B and C being attached to the rail of a bedstead, and ad- 9o justable relatively thereto, according to re quirements, and the cradle, &c. being readily rocked by anyone in the bed. When it is desired to fold the attachment, crib, rbc., out of the way, it is only necessary to swing the crib A and the supporting-arms D and E downwardly in the direction indicated in Fig.

l, the journals S turning readily in the collar R, as will be evident. When the arms D and E have reached their horizontal positions, roo they can then be turned laterally on the j ournals P, so that the crib or cradle will be placed under the bed out of the way, as indicated in Fig. 3.

If it is desired for any reason to remove the cradle or crib, the nuts Z are removed, when the sleeve X, carrying the cradle with it, can be withdrawn.

If it is desired to remove or adj ust the attaching devices B and C, the thumb-nuts J are properly turned, whereupon the said devices can be readily removed or adjusted, as is evident.

The stems U may be raised and lowered in the tube T, so as to adjust the height of the cradle, 85e., said stems being held in adjusted position by the screws T.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is-

l. In an attachment of the character named, a pair of normally upright supports adapted to sustain a cradle, &c., and lugs attached to a suitable portion of a bedstead, in combination with upright and lateral bearings, and journals common to said lugs and supports, whereby said cradle can be sustained beside said bedstead, or swing downwardly under the latter, substantially as described.

2. In an attachment of the character named, a pair of upwardly-extending supports adapted to sustain a cradle, &c., journals extend ing at an angle from said supports, bearings in which said journals are mounted, lugs attached to a suitable portion of a bedstead,

and journals on said bearings movably supported in said lugs, whereby said cradle can be Vsust-ained beside said bedstead or swung downwardly under the latter, substantially as described.

3. In an attachment ol the character named, a clamping` device consisting of one member formed of the plate F, the latter having thereon the hook D', the ears G and the threaded stem II, the other member having a slotted limb adjustable in said ears, said limb having a hook thereon, and means for clamping said members relatively to each other, substantially as described.

4. In an attachment of the character named, clamping devices attachable to a bedstead, means for adjusting said devices, a lug` attached to one of the latter, a journal passing therethrough, means for holdin g said journal in position, a bearing attached to said journal, a second journal movable in said bearing, a spring and nut for holding said last-m ention ed journal in position, an upright member attached to the latter, and an arm supported in said upright member, and adapted to sustain a crib, cradle, &c., substantially as described.
