Application filed February 3, 1916. Serial No. 75,365.
I childs hammock in a position above and transversely of such bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which is adjustable in height and which may be quickly and conveniently mounted and dismounted.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the'invention applied to a bed;
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the hammock and the upper ends ofthe adjustable supports, showing a brace-rod interposed between the latter;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the supports; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view illustrating a brace-connecting means.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views-- 1 indicates the side-rails of an ordinary bed, which rails may be of any of the various forms commonly used in beds; and 2 indicates the side-membersof the frame of a common type of bed-spring, which frame may be of any of the various common forms wherein the side-members are exposed.
Mounted upon the. opposite sides of the.
bed are two precisely similar upright supports for a hammock, each support being designed to have an end of a hammock, as 3, attached to its upper end. .Each support comprises a vertically disposed body member 4, preferably of tubular form, having adjustably mounted at its'lower end a yoke .6 which is designed to seat upon the side-rail l of a bed with the parallel members thereof disposed in straddling relation to said siderail. In the embodimentv herein shown a stem 5 carried by said yoke is adjustable within the lower end of the tube 4. A set screw 7 carried by said tube 4 is designed to be set in impinging relation to the stem 5 for holding the latter in adjusted position. Telescoped within the upper end of said tube 4: is a rod 8 having a-ring or hook 9 at its upper end for receiving. an end of the hammock 3. A set-screw 10 carried by said tube 4 is designed to be set in-impinging relation to said rod 8 forholding the latter in adjusted, position.
A brace 11 is provided whereby the support is braced in upright position both against inward swinging and lateral swinging movements. Said brace comprises a .metal strap which is bent into substantially U-shape in side elevation and which is attached to the side of the tube 4 intermediate the ends of the latter. The lateral members 11 of said brace have their end portions bent to form inwardly directed arms 12 which are designedto closely underlie the side-rail 1 of the bed 'and which have curved terminals13 designed to extend upward between said side-rail and the adjacent sidemember 2 of'the spring-frame and to overlie the latter, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
A transversely disposed bar 14 has its opposite ends rigidly attached to the substantially vertical lateral members 11 of the brace 11, and a bolt 15 directed inward through the middle portion of said bar is movable within vertical slots 16 provided in directly opposite sides of the tube 4, said bolt being projected through said slots and having a nut 17 threaded on its inner end for preventing withdrawal. The bar 14 is preferably; located about midway between the lower ends of the lateral members 11 of the-strap and the transverse upper portion 11 of said strap, which latter has a verticalslot'18 therein which opens outward through the upper edge thereof, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Said slot 18 is adapted, when the strap-like brace is in adjusted position, to receive therein a bolt 19 carried by the tube 4. A wing-nut 20 is threaded upon the outer end of said bolt 19 and is adapted to be set in frictional engagement with the upper portion 11 for holding the brace in adjusted position.
As is obvious, the hammock 3 mounted upon the opposite supports will serve to maintain the latter against outward swinging movement with respect to the bed, as shown in Fig. 1. However, for rigidly maintaining said supports against such movements, a transverse rod may be connected at its ends to the upper ends of the supports, as shown in Fig. 2. Said rod is preferably of a telescopic type, adapting it for use on various widths of beds, and preferably con sists of a central tubular member 21 and oppositely disposed rod sections 22, the latter having their inner ends adj ustably received within the ends of said tubular member and their outer ends detachably secured to the upper ends of the rods 8. Said tubular member 21 preferably has a ring or eye 23 formed thereon to which may be attached the ends of straps or cords 24: having their opposite ends attached at suitable points to' the hammock for maintaining the latter against tipping over.
In applying the supports to a bed, the wing nut 20 being loosened to permit the brace 11 to drop to the extent permitted by the slots 16, the arms 12 of said brace are placed in closely underlying engagement with the side-rail 1 of the bed with their terminals 13 overlying the side-member .2 of the spring frame. Supporting said brace in this position by hand, the yoke 6 is placed in seated position upon said side-rail, the setscrew 7 having been first released or loosened to permit said yoke to be adjusted. When said yoke has been properly adjusted, said set-screw 7 is tightened, as is also the wing nut 20, the tube 4 having been lowered to a point where the. bolt 19 seats in the slot 18 in the transverse member of the brace. The rod 8 is then adjusted to a proper height, whereupon the device is ready for receiving thereon an end of the hammock 3.
What is claimed is l. A sling for a childs hammock, comprising a pair of upright supports designed for mounting upon opposite sides of a bed, each support comprising an upright body member, a yoke carried by the lower end of said member and designed to seat upon the siderail of the bed, a brace mounted upon and vertically adjustable with respect to said member, means for maintaining said brace in adjusted position, and arms carried by said brace having portions for seating in underlying relation to said side-rails and having terminal portions for overlying the side member of a spring frame.
2. A sling for a childs hammock, comprising a pair .of upright supports designed for mounting upon opposite sides of a bed, each support comprising an upright body member, means carried by said member for seating upon the side-rail of the bed, and a brace adjustably connected to said member having portions designed to underlie said side-rail and to overlie the side member of a spring frame.
3. A sling for a childs hammock, compris ing a pair of upright supports designed for mounting upon opposite sides of a bed, each support comprising an upright body member, a yoke adjustably mounted on said member and adapted to seat upon a side-rail of the bed, and a brace carried by said member, said brace having a substantially vertical member located at each side of said body member, each vertical member being bent inward to form a portion for underlying said side-rail and a terminal portion for overlying the side member of a spring frame.
4:. A sling for a childs hammock, comprising a pair of upright supports designed for mounting upon opposite sides of a bed, each support comprisingan upright body member, a yoke adj ustably mounted on said member and adapted to seat upon a side-rail of the bed, a brace carried by said member, said brace having a substantially vertical member located at each side of said body member, each vertical member being bent inward to form a portion for underlying said siderail and a-terminal portion for overlying the side member of a spring frame, said brace being vertically movable with respect to said body member, and means for holding said brace in adjusted position.
5. A sling for a childs hammock, comprising a pair of upright supports designed for mounting upon opposite sides of a bed, each support comprising an upright tubular member, a yoke for seating upon a side-rail of the bed, said yoke having a stem adjustably received within said tube, and a substantially U-shaped brace adjustably mounted on said tube, the substantially parallel members of said brace being disposed at opposite sides of said tube and having their lower ends bent to form portions for underlying said side-rails and adjacent portions. for overlying the side-member of a spring frame.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signaturein presence oftwosubscribing witnesses.
