MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,123, dated April 28, 1896. A pli ation fil d June 22, 1894. Serial No. 515,326. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RAE DICKSON, of Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Memorandum- Books, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention relates to manifold memorandum-books; and one of the principal objects is to provide a simple and effective means for holding the carbon-sheet in a suitable position for use in the book without permanently securing it to either the cover or tablet, and to also hold the tablet attached to a suitable cover without permanently securing it thereto.
The invention consists, first, in providing a manifold tablet with a tongue having a pocket for the reception of a carbon-sheet; second, in the combination therewith of a detachable cover having a pocket for the reception of the tablet-tongue, and, third, in the general arrangement and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved manifold memorandumbook, showing the tablet detachably secured in a pocket of the cover and the carbon-sheet detachably secured to the pocket-tongue of the tablet, the opening of the pocket in the cover being near the center of said cover and the opening in the tongue being at its upper end; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the opening of the respective pockets at the sides thereof; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Figs. 4. and 5, respectively, plan and side views of the detachable card and the carbon-sheet attached thereto; Fig. 6, a plan view of the cover-back, showing the pocket-opening for the detachable carbon-sheet card at the side; Fig. 7, a side view of the tablet, showing the detachable card in dotted lines in the pocket of the pocket-tongue and the carbon-sheet folded over the upper or top end of the tablet; and Fig. 8, a plan view of the detachable card,
showing two carbon-sheets attached thereto at opposite sides.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a tablet composed of original and duplicate sheets, which may be in a folded or unfolded condition. One end of a thick paper tongue B is folded over the upper or top end of the tablet, and staples I) pass therethrough to confine the leaves of said tablet and the thick paper tongue together, the said tongue being preferably provided with a pocket B, having an opening B preferably at one end, for the insertion of a detachable card D, carrying a sheet of carbon-paper E, attached thereto. The pocket in the tongue may be provided with an opening B at one side, (see Fig. 3,) so that the carbon-sheet will fold over the side of the tablet instead of over the end.
The letter 0 indicates an ordinary cover made of suitable material and having a pocket 0, formed on the inner side of its back with an opening C near the center of the cover. The tablet, when used with the cover 0, is detachably secured to the cover by inserting the pocket-tongue B into the pocket 0, and the detachable card, with the attached carbon-sheet, may be also inserted in said pocket between the tongue 13 and the outer side of the pocket. Instead of the pocket-opening being near the center of thecover, as shown in Fig. 1, it may be at the side, as shown at 0 Fig. 6.
It is not essential that the bottom of the pocket in the tablet should be closed, as the card D is of such size that it will fit the pocket snugly, and the attached carbon-sheet is folded over either the side or end of the tablet upon the duplicating-leaf.
In assembling the parts of the book, as shown in Fig. 2, the tablet is attached to the cover by inserting the pocket-tongue in the end opening of the cover-pocket C, and the card D, carrying the carbon-sheet is, inserted into the pocket-tongue through the side opening or slit 0 in the cover-pocket.
When two duplicates of the original are to be made at a time, a second carbon-sheet E is attached to the card at the side opposite to the first attached sheet, as shown in Fig. 8.
In case the tablet is to be used without the detachable cover both sides of the pocket of the tongue is provided with openings for the insertion of carbon-sheet card; but if the tablet is to be used with the cover then both sides of the cover-pocket may be slitted or provided with openings and the card with its attached carbon sheets inserted in said pocket. In using the tablet with the detachable cover it will not be necessary to provide the tablet-tongue with a pocket, as the card carrying the carbon-sheet can be inserted in the cover-pocket.
It will be apparent that the carbon-sheet maybe attached to the card at either the ends or sides, depending upon whether it is desired to have it fold over the end or side of the tablet. Should the carbon-sheet become worn or injured, so as to make it unfit for use, it may be detached from the card and a new sheet may be substituted by attaching it to the card with any suitable paste or glue, or the card may be replaced with a new card and attached carbon-sheet.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a manifold memorandum book, the
. combination with a tablet composed of original and duplicating leaves, of a paper tongue 30 secured to one end of the tablet and provided with a pocket, and a detachable card having a carbon-sheet attached thereto and adapted to be carried in said pocket.
2. In a manifold memorandum-book, the combination, with a tablet composed of original and duplicating leaves and provided with a paper tongue having a pocket, and a card having a carbon-sheet attached thereto and adapted to be held in said pocket, of a cover provided with a single pocket adapted to receive the paper tongue and thereby detachably hold the tablet to the cover.
3. In a manifold order-book, the combination, with a tablet composed of a series of original and duplicating leaves and having rigidly attached thereto a paper tongue pro vided with a pocket having openings at opposite sides, of a card having a sheet of carbon-paper attached thereto at opposite sides and adapted to be received and held in said pocket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my full name.
