SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 559,015, dated April 28, 1896. I Application 1119a January 10,1896. Serial No! 574,954. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, EDWIN WILMONT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
This invention relates to devices for suspending pictures from the walls of compartments; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and eifective device of this class which is comparatively inexpensive and which is well adapted to accomplish -the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompa- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved picture-hanger connected with a wall or other support, and Fig. 2 a back plan View thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a hanger consisting of a spring-metal plate which is bent to form a loop, as shown at A, the lower side of which extends backwardly and upwardly and is provided with a crosshead B, to which are secured or on which are formed projections or prongs C, which are. adapted to be driven into the Wall or other support, and the upper side of the loop A is carried upwardly and backwardly and is much longer than the lower side and is adapted to rest against or press upon the wall or support, as shown at D.
The loop A may be of any desired material or metal, and the head D and that portion of the lower side of the loop adjacent thereto are preferably thicker and heavier than the other portions thereof, and the lower portion of the loop, or that part thereof from which the picture or other article is suspended, is preferably much wider than the sides.
This device may be quickly and easily secured to a molding or to a Wall, and when once in position will constitute a safe and efficient hanger-for the pictures and other articles, and, as will be understood, it may be ornamented in any desired manner.
As shown in the drawings, the projections or prongs G are in line with the lower por tion of the loop; but this is not absolutely essential, and said projections or prongs may be so formed as to enter the wall or other support at right angles to the surface thereof, and other changes in and modifications of the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A hanger for pictures or other articles, comprising a fiat metal loop, the lower side of which extends upwardly and backwardly, and is provided with'a cross-head having prongs or projections adapted to be inserted into the wall or other support, the other side of which is longer, and extends upwardly and backwardly and is adapted to be pressed upon the wall or support, substantially as shown and described.
2. A. hanger for pictures and other articles, comprising a loop formed from spring metal, one side of which is provided with a crosshead at the end thereof, on which are formed, or to which are secured projections or prongs which are adapted to be inserted into the wall or other support, and the other side of-which is longer, and extends backwardly and upwardly, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of January, 1896.
