CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,878, dated April 21, 1896. Application filed. August 25, 1892. Serial No. 444,098. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others IO skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 The object of the invention is to provide a closure of improved construction which will be simple and cheap and easily manufactured.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the top of a can constructed in accordance with my invention with the closure detached. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views.
A designates the top of a can, which is pro- 2 5 vidcd with an opening or mouth within which the closure is secured. Around the opening or month are marginal depressions,over which a suitable packing carried by the closure will lie to provide a tight joint. That part of the top of the can surrounding the opening therein has a number of notches 13, between which the metal is bent down to provide depending cams or projections b, the lower edges of which are inclined from one notch to the next.
3 5 Though I have described my invention asbeing applied to the top of a can, it is obvious it can be applied to the side or bottom.
(l designates the cover, which is stamped so as to provide a peripheral flange 0, the cen- 4o tral portion a of the cover being sunk below the flange and formed to present a channel or recess D, located adjacent to the vertical wall which depends from the flange. At intervals corresponding with the notches 13 in the top the bottom of this channel or recess D is swaged or stamped to form outwardly-projecting lips or lugs E, which extend beneath the flange c and are inclined in both directions. These lips or lugs are adapted to en- 5o gage with the inclined projections or cams Z) formed on the top, and also serve the additional function of retaining the washer or band D upon the closure.
It will be noted that the can-top and its parts -to wit, the depending cams -are struck up or formed of a single piece, and the configuration of the top is such that it is not necessarily limited to sheet-metal structure, but that the mouth may be molded, which would be the case if the vessel were made of glass.
The cover 0 is essentially made of sheet metal and is provided peripherally with a projecting flange c and a countersunk central portion, and adjacent to the flange c is a vertical wall 0, and between the same and the central bottom portion 0 of the cover is a recess or bead D, which is stamped or bent to provide projecting lips or lugs E, each lip being composed of a fold of metal which is integral with the cover and a portion of the bead D.
WV hen it is desired to connect the parts to each other, the cover is placed in the top of the can, the lips E being passed through the notches or recesses B, and is then turned so that the lips will engage with the inclined projections or cams b and draw the parts together to form a tight and secure joint.
The cover may be provided with a bail F, which is secured thereto by a strip which is soldered or otherwise attached to the cover, and said swinging bail when not in use lies within the countersunk central portion of the cover, as shown.
I do not, of course, restrict the use of my invention to cans, as it may obviously be employed as a closure for any receptacle having a mouth or opening adapted to be closed in a similar manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure 0 by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a receptacle-top having its mouth provided with depending cams, of a cover fitting into said mouth and provided with projecting lips each composed of a fold of metal integral with said cover, substantially as described.
2. The combination. with a reccptacle-top having its mouth provided with depending cams, of a cover having a countersunk cen- Ioo tral portion provided with projecting lips each composed of a fold in the metal of the cover, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a receptacle-top having its mouth provided with recesses or notches and depending cams, of a cover having a countersunk central portion and projecting lips which engage with the depending cams of the top, each of said projecting lips being composed of a fold in the metal of the cover, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a receptacle-top having its mouth provided with depending cams, of a cover having a countersunk central portion having a peripheral depending bead formed at two or more points into lips projecting beyond the countersunk portion, substantially as described.
5. A closure, consisting of the flange c, the adjacent vertical wall 0', the bottom 0 and two or more lips E projecting beyond the wall 0, each lip being composed of a portion of the bead D, substantially as described.
6. An integral cover for receptacles, consisting of a horizontal flange, an adjacent vertical wall, a bottom and two or more lips projecting from said bottom and beyond said vertical wall, each lip being composed of a fold in the metal of the cover; substantially as described.
