Description

(KoModeL) J. L. DE ST EIGER.
, FRUIT JAR. I No. 288,888. I I Patented Nov. 27. 1883.
n rams. Pmwm wr. Wadingian. 0 cv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. DE srnrenn, or LA SALLE, ILL'iNoIs.
FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,983, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed May 17. 1883 (No modelll To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn: L. DE STEIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Salle, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastening which is adapted to molded glass fruit-jars.
The fastening of which this invention con sists embodies theadvantages and accomplishes the purposes which are fully set forth in the application for Letters Patent of the United States for improvement in fruit-jars, filed by me January 17, 1883.
In the drawings which illustrate my. present invention and make part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View of the cover of a fruit-jar, and Fig. 2 an elevation of 1 the upper part of a fruitjar constructed in accordance with my invention.
The cover A is stamped or otherwise formed out of sheet metal, so that it shall have inwardly-projecting ridges a-a, preferably three in number. Each ridge a is concavo-convex in shape, the highest pointbeing near the top of the cover, and curves downward equally and gradually on both sides to near the rim of the cover. The ends of adjacent ridges ap proach near to each other, but are sufficiently far apart to permit outwardlyprojecting lugs. b b. molded on the neck of the jar B, to easily pass between them.
To permit of the molding of the lugs on the neck of the jar, they are beveled on the top (and sides. The lugs '11 1) correspond in number to the ridges c a on the cover A, so that when the cover is placed on the jar a lug shall fit in each space between adjacent ridges. When the cover is placed on the jar, resting on the shoulder thereof, the lower sides of the lugs 12 b are above the upper sides of the ridges a a, and a turn of the cover either to the right or left engages the ridges under the lugs. As the cover is turned, bringing the lugs nearer and nearer to the centers of the ridges, it is held more and more tightly and securely, and is held tightest when the lugs approach nearest the centers of the ridges, the construction being such that the lugs can never pass the centers.
To render the jar air-tight when the cover is on, an elastic gasket, 0, of suitable material, is placed on the shoulder of the jar before the cover is put in position.
lVhat I claim as my invention is A'sheet-metal fruit-jar cover, A. provided with inwardly-projecting convex ridges a a, in combination with a molded glass fruit-jar, B, provided with outwardl y-proj ecting beveled lugs b 1), adapted to fit over said ridges, sub stantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH L. DE STEIGER.
