To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS NESOM, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hammocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like figures refer to like parts.

My invention relates to a baby-hammock intended to be used as a substitute for a cradle, or, if desired, a swing. It is superior to a cradle because it is cheaper, more convenient, as it is suspended, and therefore can be pulled up out of the way, and it is easier 011 the child, as it is soft and flexible and has a more agreeable movement.

The nature of my invention will appear from the accompanying drawings and the description following.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my baby-hammock. Fig. 2 is an outside view in elevation of my hinge apparatus with the side bars broken away. Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the same with the side bars removed. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the hammock closed, with the means for holding it closed shown detached as well as attached.

I first make a hinge apparatus, consisting of aframe 1 with an upward-extending arm 2, provided at its upper end with a large eye 3 to receive the rope 4. The frame 1 is provided at its lower endv with a small eye 5 to receive the reinforcing-cords, that extend about the periphery of the netting or hammock 6. The frame 1 is provided on each side, at its lower end, with a wing or extension, to which. is pivoted at 7 an arm 8, having on its upper end a ferrule 9 to receive the side bars 10. The ferrule 9 has in its inner periphery a V- shaped rib or feather 11 for the purpose of preventing the side bar from turning and getting out of position after it has been properly inserted. To prevent the side bars 10 from dropping too low, I provide a stop-lug 12 on the wing of the frame 1 to limit the downward movement of the arm 8, so that the arm 8 and the side bar 10 are permitted to move a quarter-circle-that is, from the vertical to the horizontal position.

The side bars 10 are bowed, so that the bars form an ellipse, and to the side bars is secured the netting (5. From the eye 3 in one hinge apparatus I extend the rope a to the eye in the opposite hinge apparatus, preferably, however, turning the rope once round a ring 13, which enables me to adjust the pitch of the hammock. The hammock is suspended from the ring 13 by the rope 14; to the ring 15, which is carried by a hook or suitable eye 16, that is secured to the ceiling or other suitable object.

The hammock can be closed by lifting the side bars until they touch each other and clasping the two by the clasp 17 or any other suitable means, as seen in Fig. 4:.

From the foregoing description it is seen that I have an unusually economical substitute for a cradle that it can be pulled up out of the way or its position from the floor adj usted, that it can be placed out of doors as well as indoors, that it is safe to the child, especially when made deep or when closed, as seen in Fig. 4, and that it is susceptible of a pleasant swinging motion. It is especially well adapted for outdoor use and the pitch of the hammock can be quickly adjusted.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a hammock, a hinge apparatus comprising a frame portion with an eye in its upper end for the supporting-ropes and an eye in its lower end for the hammock-cords and two laterally-extending wings each having thereon a stop-lug, and a pair of arms having on their outer end a ferrule for side bars and so pivoted to the wings that such stop-lugs will hold the arms in an outward position.

2. A hammock comprising a pair of side bars, a netting secured to the same, a hinge apparatus at each end comprising a framework with an eye in its upper end and a pair of laterally-extending wings having stop-lugs thereon and an eye in the lower portion to which the netting may be secured, and arms pivoted to such wings so as to engage the stop-1ugs and having on their outer ends ferrules to receive the side bars.

3.
